α-Pinene- and β-myrcene-rich volatile fruit oil ofCupressus arizonicaGreene from northwest Iran

Abstract: Cupressus arizonica Greene is an aromatic evergreen coniferous plant with great importance in urban horticulture and in the pharmaceutical and fragrance industries. The hydrodistilled volatile fruit oil of cultivated C. arizonica from northwest Iran was analysed by GC/MS. Forty-three components were identified, accounting for 96.4% of the total oil. Monoterpenoids (91.9%) dominated the identified components of the essential oil, followed by a lesser portion of sesquiterpenoids (4.2%). Monoterpene hydrocarbons … Show more

“…There is little information available on the chemistry of Cupressus × leylandii , the source of the cypress mulch that was effective in laboratory and field studies but it is anecdotally repellent to termites (http://www.cypressmulch.com.au/). Members of the genus reportedly have pinene- and -myrcene-rich terpeneoid volatiles 21,22 that have widely-reported repellent effects on arthropods 23 that are likely to be key to the effects observed on C. formicarius . Mulch of Eucalyptus albens was potent in laboratory and field tests and the members of this genus are known to produce volatile terpenes with activity against arthropod pests 24,25 .…”

“…Interestingly, β-pinene was found in all the tissues, except seeds. Pinene is a naturally occurring constituent of the essential oils in many plant species that has a relevant role in insect repellency and allelopathy (inhibiting root growth of the tested weed species) ( Bohlmann et al, 1997 ; Phillips et al, 1999 ; McKay et al, 2003 ; Hassanpouraghdam, 2011 ; Chowhan et al, 2013 ; Huang et al, 2013 ; Pajaro-Castro et al, 2017 ). AvPS (AvTPS1) catalyzed GPP to form α-pinene and β-pinene, producing 63% β-pinene as a major product.…”

“…Meanwhile, citral is an acyclic monoterpenoid, a naturally occuring β-substituted vinyl aldehyde, found in lemons, limes, and oranges ( Oliveira et al, 2014 ). Other monoterpenoids such as α-pinene (α-PIN), β-myrcene, δ-3-carene, terpinolene, and camphene can be isolated from Cupressus arizonica Greene fruit oil ( Hassanpouraghdam, 2011 ).…”
