“…Since appearance of multinucleated giant cells and exfoliation of spermatids observed in the present study have been repeatedly reported in various experimental studiesclomiphene-treated rats (Vitale et al, 1973), E2-treated mice (Ohta and Takasugi, 1974), testosterone-treated and hypophysectomized rats (Muffly et al, 1994), E2B-treated rats (Blanco-Rodriguez and Martinez-Garcia, 1996), E2B-treated mice (Toyama et al, 2001a), BPA-, E2-, or E2B-treated rats and mice (Toyama and Yuasa, 2004), GOPC (Golgi associated PDZ-and coiled-and coil motif-containing protein) -/-mice (Yao et al, 2002;Ito et al, 2004, in this isssue), CAF1 (Chromatin Assembly Factor 1) -/ -or Cnot -/ -mice (Nakamura et al, 2004), mgcl (mouse germ cell less) -/ -mice (Kimura et al, 2003;Maekawa et al, 2004, in this issue) these phenomena do not seem to be hormone-specific defects.…”

“…It is noteworthy that the adult administration of E2B caused similar affects on mice (Toyama et al, 2001a). The treated mice showed disrupted spermiogenesis, and the ectoplasmic specialization between the Sertoli cell and spermatids was also affected.…”

“…Exposure to the synthetic hormone, 17β-estradiol (E2), has been shown to induce Leydig cell atrophy, seminiferous tubule degeneration, and decreased sperm production, resulting in decreased testis weight (Cook et al, 1998). Estrogens are closely related to testicular development, spermatogenesis control, and male fertility (Carreau et al, 2007;Sinkevicius et al, 2009;Toyama et al, 2001). Estrogens also suppress c-KIT (type III receptor tyrosine kinase) expression in seminiferous tubules of the testis and simultaneously decrease proliferation and increase apoptosis in germ cells.…”

“…Weights of the efferent ductules and epididymis showed similar results as that of testis weight. Estrogen is correlated with spermatogenesis regulation, histopathology, and changes in reproductive organ weight or fertility (Cook et al, 1998;Toyama et al, 2001;Aleem et al, 2006;Carreau et al, 2007). It has been suggested that decreased testis weight by estrogen treatment is related with interstitial cell atrophy, seminiferous tubule degeneration, and reduced sperm number (Cook et al, 1998).…”
