“…After filtration, washing with double deionised water, and drying at 50°C, 15 mg of Ag 3 PO 4 were mixed with 0.8 mg of pure powder graphite. Oxygen isotope ratios were measured by reducing silver phosphate to CO 2 using graphite reagent (40,41). Samples were weighed into tin reaction capsules and loaded into quartz tubes and degassed for 30 min at 80°C under vacuum.…”

“…In the marine record, cold climatic intervals have been recognized during the Early Cretaceous period, with two major events occurring (i) during the early Valanginian, and (ii) from the late Barremian to the early Albian (4, 5). The most recent 40 Ar∕ 39 Ar dating of sanidine crystals from tuff beds within the Yixian Formation and the base of the overlying Jiufotang Formation gave an age bracket of 129.7 AE 0.5 Ma to 122.1 AE 0.3 Ma for the deposition of the Yixian Formation (6). These ages correspond to a Barremian to early Aptian age interval which is encompassed by the second cold interval.…”

“…The d 18 O value of Durango ref er ence ap a tite rel a tive to VSMOW was taken as 9.82‰ (com pa ra ble with Durango 3) com po si tion of 9.81 ±0.25‰ mea sured by Lécuyer et al (1998) and 9.80 ±0.25‰, in de pend ently de ter mined by C. Lécuyer using the GIRMS method (Rigo et al, 2012). Durango was analysed first, then again af ter ev ery three spots of stud ied samples.…”

“…About 20 mi cro grams of enamel bioapatite must be chem i cally pu ri fied from other ox y gen sources in the enamel min eral matrix, mainly hydroxyl and car bon ate ions, and trace quan ti ties of organics. Then, chem i cal ox i da tion of bioapatite by so dium hypochlorite leads to re moval of re sid ual or ganic con stit u ents af ter re ac tion of sil ver phos phate (Ag 3 PO 4 ) with pre cise pro portions of graph ite to form CO 2 (O'Neil et al, 1994;Lécuyer et al, 1998). Both the phos phate and car bon ate com po nents of bioapatite are avail able for anal y sis.…”

“…The measurement of 18 O/ 16 O ratios is performed by the reaction of silver phosphates with graphite to form CO 2 (O'Neil et al, 1994;Lécuyer et al, 1998). Samples of Ag 3 PO 4 are mixed with pure graphite powder in proportions of about 0.8 mg of C to 15 mg of Ag 3 PO 4 .…”
