Early Cretaceous vertebrate assemblages from East Asia and particularly the Jehol Biota of northeastern China flourished during a period of highly debated climatic history. While the unique characters of these continental faunas have been the subject of various speculations about their biogeographic history, little attention has been paid to their possible climatic causes. Here we address this question using the oxygen isotope composition of apatite phosphate (δ ) from various reptile remains recovered from China, Thailand, and Japan. δ values indicate that cold terrestrial climates prevailed at least in this part of Asia during the Barremian—early Albian interval. Estimated mean air temperatures of about 10 ± 4 °C at midlatitudes (∼42 °N) correspond to present day cool temperate climatic conditions. Such low temperatures are in agreement with previous reports of cold marine temperatures during this part of the Early Cretaceous, as well as with the widespread occurrence of the temperate fossil wood genus Xenoxylon and the absence of thermophilic reptiles such as crocodilians in northeastern China. The unique character of the Jehol Biota is thus not only the result of its evolutionary and biogeographical history but is also due to rather cold local climatic conditions linked to the paleolatitudinal position of northeastern China and global icehouse climates that prevailed during this part of the Early Cretaceous.

Enamel sam ples dis play large intra-tooth d 18 O vari a tions that may re flect a sea sonal fluc tu a tion in the d 18 O of lo cal palaeoclimate pa ram e ters. The pres ent pa per provides an ef fec tive an a lyt i cal pro to col for se quen tial d 18 O anal y sis of hu man teeth us ing SHRIMP IIe/MC ion microprobe. It is pos si ble to fol low the in ner enamel layer along enamel-dentine junc tion on a high spa tial scale in a range about 0.02 mm of spot di am e ter and 0.12-0.14 mm of the dis tance be tween spots. Us ing the meth od ol ogy de scribed herein, we can achieve an ex ter nal pre ci sion for d 18 O anal y sis <0.2‰ (1s). The num ber of 60 to 90 sin gle anal y ses cov er ing the enamel layer between the incisal and api cal ends is enough to ob tain tem po ral res o lu tion of less than one month and to doc u ment pre cisely sea sonal fluc tu a tion caused by lo cal en vi ron men tal and cli mate fac tors. The meth od ol ogy of d 18 O in situ mea sure ments has been tested on hu man teeth from Tell Majnuna, a 4th mil len nium BCE cem e tery in North ern Mes o po ta mia, which is a rel atively arid area with high sea sonal dif fer ences in pre cip i ta tion and tem per a ture. Oxygen Isotope Composition Of Human Teeth And The Record Of Climate Changes In France (Lorraine) During The Last 1700 Years

In order to study climate variations during the last 1700 years in eastern France, fifty-eight oxygen isotope compositions of phosphate were measured in human tooth enamel. The individuals, who lived in Lorraine, are assumed to have drunk local water derived directly from rainfall. According to previous work, drinking water is the main source of oxygen that sets the isotopic composition of phosphatic tissues in humans. The empirical fractionation equation determined from our data combined with those of Longinelli's one [Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 48 (1984) 385] was used to calculate the oxygen isotope composition of meteoric waters. The mean air temperature was inferred from these isotope ratios and the Von Grafenstein et al. 's [Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 60 (1996) 4025] relationship between δ 18 O and air temperature. Oxygen isotope composition of present-day individuals yields a mean air temperature of 9.9 ± 1.7 • C which is consistent with meteorological data. Application of this method to historical individuals results in mean air temperatures estimates 0 to 3 • C higher than present-day air temperature. These warm air temperatures are not realistic during the so-called Little Ice Age for which an air-cooling of about 0.5 to 2 • C has been documented. We propose that these relatively high δ 18 O values of human tooth enamel reflect higher mean δ 18 O values of meteoric water which can be attributed to an increased proportion of summer rainfall during the "Little Ice Age" time frame in Lorraine.
