Laboratory trials were conducted on the effect of larval overcrowding of Culex pipiens molestus and Theobaldia longiareolata on the biolethal efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis against third and fourth instars of the first mosquito species as well as the third instar larvae of the second species.
It was disclosed that there was a distinct biolethal efficacy of the bacteria against the third instar larvae of the two species on the density levels 25, 50, 75 and 100 larvae/200 ml water. The highest density levels (125 and 200 larvae/200 ml water) tolerated the effect of the bacteria. However, the fourth instar larvae of C. pipiens molestus exhibited comparable response to the biolethal effect of the bacteria in all the experimental density levels of larvae.
It might be indicated that the third instar larvae of T. longiareolata exhibited higher response to B. thuringiensis var. israelensis compared with C. pipiens molestus in all density levels. Hence, larval density in mosquito breeding places should be considered as a factor which interfers with biological application of the bacterium in mosquito larvae management.
