This articles introduces a new lifetime model called the generalized transmuted Kumaraswamy distribution which extends the Kumaraswamy distribution from the family proposed by Nofal et al., (2017). We provide hazard and survival functions of the proposed distribution. The statistical properties of the proposed model are provided and the method of Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) was proposed in estimating its parameters.
We investigated the total antioxidant capacity of Aidia borneensis leaf infusion, a Bornean endemic plant, which is traditionally consumed as a home-remedy beverage in Brunei Darussalam. The antioxidant capacity of the infusion of A. borneensis leaves was evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging ability. We found that the infusion shows a relatively high antioxidant capacity, and it was attributed to its high phenolic, flavonoid, and flavanol contents which were evaluated by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, colorimetric assay, and aluminum chloride colorimetric method, respectively. By comparing its total antioxidant capacity, we estimated that the infusion of A. borneensis leaves is in the middle rank among twelve different commercially available Camellia sinensis teas. Our findings would have significant implications on A. borneensis products from Brunei Darussalam and on the feasibility of establishing this new beverage among the commercially available conventional C. sinensis and herbal teas.
Fifty ear swab samples were examined from pediatric patients attending Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. The samples were collected from ENT department, pediatric out patients department (PODP) and General out Patients Department (GOPD). The swabs were tested by culturing for bacterial pathogens, where 47 (94.0%) of the samples yielded growth. The most predominant isolate was Staphylococcus aureus, with a total occurrence of 26 (55.32%) followed by Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Streptococcus pneumoniae, with total occurrences of 12 (25.53%), 7 (14.89%), 1(2/13%) and 1 (2.13%) respectively. Based on age group, 0-2yrs age group were more infected (16 infected). Of the two sexes, males were 28 (56%) while females were 22 (44%) and all were within the age range of 0-12 years. Antimicrobial sensitivity test showed that the bacterial isolates were susceptible to Augmentin, Gentamycin, Tetracycline, Amoxicillin and ofloxacin but resistant to Ampicillin, Streptomycin, Cotrimoxazole, cefixime and Cloxacillin.
