Growth performance [specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (WG), food conversion ratio (FCR) and survival rate (SR)], growth hormones [growth hormone (GH-I), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II)], immune transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and antioxidant [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)] response, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA levels were determined in muscle and liver. Our data indicated that final weight, weight gain, FCR and SGR showed significant difference among the six dietary treatments (P<0.05) while there were no significant differences in survival rate between the rainbow trout from supplement fed groups and control group. HSP70 mRNA level expression in muscle was higher in fish fed SSO (P<0.05) while highest level in liver was obtained from fish fed SBO compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments for TGF-β mRNA expression level in muscle and liver. In conclusion, growth performance and expression levels of growth hormones, antioxidants, HSP70, except TGF-β were affected by five separate lipid sources. In addition, LO positively increased growth performance of juvenile rainbow trout by means of preventing oxidative stress and HSP70 and, enhanced expression of growth hormone related gene.
Introduction Presenilin 1 (PSEN1), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) play a vital role in prediction, diagnosis and therapy of metabolic disorders. Methods Metabolic enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation in serum of cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) and coronary artery diseases were measured by spectrophotometric methods. mRNA was isolated from leukocytes of the patient group and healthy adult patients. Quantitative gene expression of PSEN1, CAT and GST mRNA was identified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Results The PSEN1, CAT and GST expression in patients showed significant differences compared to the control group. PSEN1 expression in leukocytes was significantly about twice as high as that of the control group in patients with CVD. The GST, CAT and PON1 activity showed significant differences in patient groups compared to the control group. Conclusion The mRNA expression levels can be used as a potential biomarker in the diagnosis of atherosclerosis that occurs as a result of the metabolic disorder. In atherosclerotic patients, antioxidant status is independently related to an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Antioxidant activities and mRNA expressions may have predictive value, as well as available risk factors.
Royal jelly (RJ) is the special nutriment of the larva of queen honeybee (Apis mellifera) which is composed of several bioactive substances that include amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, mineral salts, and vitamins. The content of RJ varies depending on genotype of the bees according to the flora species and climatic conditions and this affects biological activities of RJ. In recent years, literature has perceived an exponential growth in amount of drug (antibiotic)-resistant pathogenic bacteria. The main reasons of growing antibiotic resistance might be credited to the abuse of the antibiotic usage demonstrating prominence of examining other choices other than the communal antibiotics, such as bee products), to avoid a additional build-up in antibiotic resistance. To our knowledge, chemical content and antimicrobial activity of Bingol RJ (BRJ) has not been investigated to date. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to study composition and antimicrobial activities of BRJ. The results demonstrated that BRJ contains major flavonoids and phenolics such as apigenin, quercetin, naringenin, gallic acid, caffeic acid that contribute antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of BRJ. We have also shown that there are some middle and short chain fatty acids that include Linoleic acid and Propionic acid. BRJ also contain majority of trace elements and mineral. In addition to chemical content, antimicrobial activity of BRJ was also investigated towards pathogens. BRJ showed antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium (8.64 mm), Escherichia coli (9.1 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (10.73 mm).
Royal Jelly is a bee product with high protein content is a unique nutrient for the queen honeybee. It leads to a substantial elongation of the lifetime of the queen in comparison to the worker honeybees via anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and anti-microbial properties. Flavonoids naturally have reported to have anticancer activities thanks to their potent antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of RJ is attributed to its rich flavonoid content however anti-oxidant activities of the Bingöl RJ has yet to be explored in detail. The goal of the current study was to investigate the antioxidant activities of Bingöl RJ on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. The results of our study revealed that Bingöl RJ at a concentration of 0.3 mg/ml significantly augmented ROS level in SH-SY5Y cells while 0.5 mg/ml of RJ had almost no effect on ROS levels. The levels of malondialdehyde in SH-SY5Y cells considerably increased in the presence of 0.3 mg/ml RJ while 0.5 mg/ml RJ had no significant impact on MDA levels in SH-SY5Y cells. The results showed that RJ treatment 0.3 mg/ml) significantly lowered the activities of SOD and CAT activity while 0.5 mg/ml of RJ had negligible effect indicating that RJ could protect the cell membranes from radical mediated cell injuries.
