The purpose of this study is to discuss the differences in the thoughts of Ahmad Khatib and Abdul Karim Amrullah about Islamic law and Minangkabau custom, especially in kinship law and the causes of these differences. This research is library research. The method used is the method of content analysis and then a comparison is made. Therefore, a review of the relevant literature was carried out such as the book Joint Safe Tiang Selamat by Abdul Karim Amrullah, Amir Syarifudddin's book, Implementation of Islamic Inheritance Law in the Mnangkabau Customary Environment and also Akhria Nazwar, Sheikh Ahmad Khatib Islamic Scientist at the Beginning of this Century. Apart from that, other related works were also reviewed as supporters. Ahmad Khatib focuses more on the inheritance of Minangkabau customs. He views that Minangkabau inheritance is haram because it is contrary to Islamic inheritance law, especially regarding heirs and the inheritance process. His student, Abdul Karim Amrullah saw that it was not haram as long as the personal property of the deceased and the property of his people were separated, namely high pusako (high inheritance). Abdul Karim Amrullah also highlighted other customary issues such as the responsibility of parents towards their children. According to him, fathers must be responsible for the lives of their children and wives. The results showed that in principle Ahmad Khatib and Abdul Karim Amrullah were not different. They both make Islamic law a determinant of whether customary law is enforced or not. It is only because of the different social situations they live in that they have different opinions. The thoughts of these two scholars influenced the Minangkabau indigenous people so that it was felt that Islamic kinship law was getting stronger in addition to the ongoing Minangkabau customary law. Customary law only applies if it does not conflict with Islamic law. The thoughts of teachers and students can lead the kinship law of the Minangkabau community to be bilateral.
