Island studies tends to focus on peripheral, isolated, and marginal aspects of island communities, while urban studies has showed scant awareness of islandness: Although many people research cities on islands, there is little tradition of researching island cities or urban archipelagos per se. Island cities (densely populated small islands and population centres of larger islands and archipelagos) nevertheless play import cultural, economic, political, and environmental roles on local, regional, and global scales. Many major cities and ports have developed on small islands, and even villages can fulfil important urban functions on lightly populated islands. Island concepts are also deployed to metaphorically describe developments in urban space. The journal Urban Island Studies explores island and urban processes around the world, taking an island approach to urban research and an urban approach to island research.
Cities have become the dominant type of human settlements, currently, more than half of the planet population are living in cities. Thus, cities have to be developed not only in terms of sustainability. Cities face more challenges regarding the dealing with extraordinary events, whether they were for natural causes or terrorist attacks, socio-economic changes, in addition to the fact that climate change is responsible for new phenomena of natural disasters, such as tsunamis. The study argues that spatial urban interventions in public spaces under specific criteria can reshape them into flexible spaces that have the potentials to be adapted with extraordinary events. The study has a theoretical methodology that investigates the relations that link flexible public spaces and the achievement of urban resilience. As well as the study has a practical perspective through the analyzing of selected cases that showed how spatial urban interventions in public spaces can contribute efficiently in reshaping these spaces to be both flexible and vibrant. The findings clarified that flexible public spaces act as safety valves for our cities during extraordinary events, meanwhile, in peacetime they act as vibrant and sustainable spaces that deliver multi socio-economic and environmental functions.
Natural disasters are inevitable and it is almost impossible to fully recoup the damage caused by the disasters. But it is possible to minimize the potential risk by developing disaster early warning strategies, methods using the new technology applications which play a crucial role in efficient mitigation and management of disasters. This paper describes the importance of the remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) in evolving a suitable strategy for disaster, crises and risk management using these technologies. The main objective of this paper is to make a Preliminary risk management plan (it is a logical and systematic method of identifying, analyzing, treating and monitoring the risks involved in any activity or process. This process helps Administrations to focus on priorities and in decisions on deploying limited resources to deal with the highest risks) using the Environmental risk map of the greater city of Cairo demonstrating the most high-risk administrative areas in the city, supported by field evidence and different sources of information. to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the Nation from all hazards, including natural disasters and other man-made disasters, by leading and supporting the Nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation. This study has shown that how can the early warning Applications can be useful in analyzing, Integrating and managing different datasets for predicting the environmental crises and disasters that may affect the urbanism inside the city and help in the preparation of the Risk management plan
