State-of-the-art indoor mobile laser scanners are now lightweight and portable enough to be carried by humans. They allow the user to map challenging environments such as multi-story buildings and staircases while continuously walking through the building. The trajectory of the laser scanner is usually discarded in the analysis, although it gives insight about indoor spaces and the topological relations between them. In this research, the trajectory is used in conjunction with the point cloud to subdivide the indoor space into stories, staircases, doorways, and rooms. Analyzing the scanner trajectory as a standalone dataset is used to identify the staircases and to separate the stories. Also, the doors that are traversed by the operator during the scanning are identified by processing only the interesting spots of the point cloud with the help of the trajectory. Semantic information like different space labels is assigned to the trajectory based on the detected doors. Finally, the point cloud is semantically enriched by transferring the labels from the annotated trajectory to the full point cloud. Four real-world datasets with a total of seven stories are used to evaluate the proposed methods. The evaluation items are the total number of correctly detected rooms, doors, and staircases.
Roads are the main transportation system in any country and, therefore, must be maintained in good physical condition to provide a safe and seamless flow to transport people and goods. However, road pavements are subjected to various defects because of construction errors, aging, environmental conditions, changing traffic load, and poor maintenance. Regular inspections are therefore recommended to ensure serviceability and minimize maintenance costs. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique widely used to inspect the subsurface condition of road pavements. Furthermore, the integral use of NDTs has received more attention in recent years since it provides a more comprehensive and reliable assessment of the road network. Accordingly, GPR has been integrated with complementary NDTs to extend its capabilities and to detect potential pavement surface and subsurface distresses and features. In this paper, the non-destructive methods commonly combined with GPR to monitor both flexible and rigid pavements are briefly described. In addition, published work combining GPR with other NDT methods is reviewed, emphasizing the main findings and limitations of the most practical combination methods. Further, challenges, trends, and future perspectives of the reviewed combination works are highlighted, including the use of intelligent data analysis.
Since 2005, Egypt has a new land-use development policy to control unplanned human settlement growth and prevent outlying growth. This study assesses the impact of this policy shift on settlement growth in Assiut Governorate, Egypt, between 1999 and 2020. With symbolic machine learning, we extract built-up areas from Landsat images of 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020 and a Landscape Expansion Index with a new QGIS plugin tool (Growth Classifier) developed to classify settlement growth types. The base year, 1999, was produced by the national remote sensing agency. After extracting the built-up areas from the Landsat images, eight settlement growth types (infill, expansion, edge-ribbon, linear branch, isolated cluster, proximate cluster, isolated scattered, and proximate scattered) were identified for four periods (1999:2005, 2005:2010, 2010:2015, and 2015:2020). The results show that prior to the policy shift of 2005, the growth rate for 1999–2005 was 11% p.a. In all subsequent periods, the growth rate exceeded the target rate of 1% p.a., though by varying amounts. The observed settlement growth rates were 5% (2005:2010), 7.4% (2010:2015), and 5.3% (2015:2020). Although the settlements in Assiut grew primarily through expansion and infill, with the latter growing in importance during the last two later periods, outlying growth is also evident. Using four class metrics (number of patches, patch density, mean patch area, and largest patch index) for the eight growth types, all types showed a fluctuated trend between all periods, except for expansion, which always tends to increase. To date, the policy to control human settlement expansion and outlying growth has been unsuccessful.
This paper deals with the application of the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method in the assessment of stone monuments. Compilation of published works and a discussion of their main findings are first addressed. Next, to show the potential of the method, a case study is presented aiming to assess the state of conservation of the rock necropolis of San Vítor de Barxacova (Ourense, Spain) consisting of 56 anthropomorphic graves carved into the natural rock. Fieldwork was carried out using a GPR system equipped with a 2.3 GHz central frequency antenna. The main goal of this study is to provide an effective approach for the detection and localization of internal damages such as fractures and voids. New amplitude-based 2D and 3D imaging strategies are presented aiming to improve damage detection. A new approach was also developed to digitize the extracted information into a point cloud format, thus improving the possibilities for 3D visualization with the surrounding environment. Although a total of 39 graves were surveyed, only 13 graves are included in this paper due to their singularity and relevant results. The potential of using GPR tests for the assessment of the conservation state of monumental stone structures is also discussed.
