The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the possible application of decision tree in landslide susceptibility assessment. The study area having a surface area of 174.8 km 2 locates at the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara and western part of Istanbul metropolitan area. When applying data mining and extracting decision tree, geological formations, altitude, slope, plan curvature, profile curvature, heat load and stream power index parameters are taken into consideration as landslide conditioning factors. Using the predicted values, the landslide susceptibility map of the study area is produced. The AUC value of the produced landslide susceptibility map has been obtained as 89.6%. According to the results of the AUC evaluation, the produced map has exhibited a good enough performance.
Phishing, a continuously growing cyber threat, aims to obtain innocent users' credentials by deceiving them via presenting fake web pages which mimic their legitimate targets. To date, various attempts have been carried out in order to detect phishing pages. In this study, we treat the problem of phishing web page identification as an image classification task and propose a machine learning augmented pure vision based approach which extracts and classifies compact visual features from web page screenshots. For this purpose, we employed several MPEG7 and MPEG7-like compact visual descriptors (SCD, CLD, CEDD, FCTH and JCD) to reveal color and edge based discriminative visual cues. Throughout the feature extraction process we have followed two different schemas working on either whole screenshots in a "holistic" manner or equal sized "patches" constructing a coarse-to-fine "pyramidal" representation. Moreover, for the task of image classification, we have built SVM and Random Forest based machine learning models. In order to assess the performance and generalization capability of the proposed approach, we have collected a mid-sized corpus covering 14 distinct brands and involving 2852 samples. According to the conducted experiments, our approach reaches up to 90.5% F1 score via SCD. As a result, compared to other studies, the suggested approach presents a lightweight schema serving competitive accuracy and superior feature extraction and inferring speed that enables it to be used as a browser plugin.
The purpose of this article is to identify the order of significance of the variables that affect science and mathematics achievement in middle school students. For this aim, the study deals with the relationship between science and math in terms of different angles using the perspectives of multiple causes-single effect and of multiple causes-multiple effects. Furthermore, the study examines and reveals how the reading skills, problem solving skills, cognitive and affective variables influence the math and science achievement. The data was collected from the results of Turkish students who participated in three international examinations; TIMSS 1999, PISA 2003 and PISA 2006. We analyzed the data using two data-mining methods (decision trees and clustering). The findings show that science or mathematics achievement is not influenced by the course-specific variable alone but also by other related variables. The following variables are the most important; the students' reading and problem-solving skills affected both mathematics and science achievement; the mathematics achievement affected the science achievement; and the science achievement affected the mathematics achievement. It is also found that the affective variables have almost equally significant effects on the science and mathematics achievement.
