This research focused on the ability of writing argumentative text correlate to writing motivation and grammatical competence. This research used survey method through correlational study. It was conducted on the students of grade X in SMA Negeri 3 Serang in academic year 2016/2017 using simple random sampling technique. The data collection in this research were tests to get the data of writing argumentation ability and grammatical competence, while the questionnaire with Likert scale is used to get the data of students' writing motivation. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The data was analyzed using SPSS program version 22.00. Prior to hypothesis testing, several requirements were done: 1) normality test by using Lilliefors technique, 2) linearity test using F test; and 3) correlation test of product moment correlation from Pearson. The results prove: 1) the correlation coefficient (rx1y) shows that the r count is higher than the r table (0.585> 0.245). Therefore the first hypothesis is accepted; 2) the correlation coefficient (rx2y) shows that the r count is higher than the r table (0.786> 0.245). This means that the second hypothesis is accepted; and 3) the Fcount coefficient 9,421> F table 4.07. Based on the test results, Pvalue 0.000 is lower than 0.05. The conclusion is that the motivation of writing (X 1) and grammatical competence (X 2) has a positive and significant relationship with the ability to write argumentative text (Y).
PurposeThere have been many studies on local languages in Indonesia. However, the study that focuses on Banten Sundanese Language, henceforth is BSL, seems to have not been widely studied, especially its idiomatic phrases. To reach the gaps, this present study aims to explore in-depth investigations about (1) the form of idiomatic phrases in BSL; (2) the use of idiomatic phrases among BSL speakers; and (3) the efforts to preserve the idiomatic phrases in BSL.MethodTo solve the problems, Pandeglang Regency in Banten Province was selected as the locus, and it involved 27 informants who were justified and snowballed. The method used in this research was a case study, with observation, interviews, and documentation as data collecting techniques.Results/findingsThe findings show there are 94 idiomatic phrases in BSL, and most of the informants (63%) claim that the phrases are limited in use.ConclusionIt concludes that real works are emerged in collecting and preserving the BSL phrases through: (a) using BSL as a colloquial language; (b) applying BSL as a compulsory course at both primary and secondary schools; (3) encouraging the regulations to rule the use of BSL among the speakers; (4) publishing BSL dictionary and other literatures; and (5) controlling the use of gadgets, smartphones, and other technological media for the children.
The study of translation has covered the equivalence and non-equivalence of the source text and the target text. Not only the meaning but also the culture of the source text should be taken as the consideration in translation to the target language. This study revealed the non-equivalence and the strategy employed of the translation of English text Harry Potter: the order of the phoenix to Indonesian language text by applying LFalligner and Antcon software. The study employed qualitative research applying content analysis. The researcher is as the primary instrument of data collection and analysis to provide a rich description of the phenomenon. The data were words, phrases, and sentences taken from the English text and Indonesian text of Harry Potter. The data were displayed and then verified using Baker (2011). The result revealed that non-equivalence occurred at word level in names of characters, places, and magical terms and above word level in idioms and fixed expression. Loan words were used as strategy aiming at educating and contributing to readers' knowledge of other cultures and their naming and to show loyalty to the source author's original style. TL has not the equivalence for the idioms of SL, thus idioms were translated lexically. The study suggests that the use of LFalligner and Antcon eased the finding and can be applied by the beginner translator.
