Mexicana (n. s.), 25(2): 375-382. RESUMEN. Se analizó el patrón de escutelación post-occipital y nucal de 111 cocodrilos (Crocodylus acutus) en La Ventanilla, Oaxaca. Se obtuvieron 33 patrones de escutelación diferentes. El patrón más frecuente observado (31.5%) fue la presencia de 4 escudos post-occipitales, la ausencia de 2 escudos nucales anteriores externos y la presencia de 2 escudos nucales posteriores (4-2EE-2) y en menor proporción (6.31%) se registró el arreglo considerado típico para la especie. Se observó una diferencia significativa entre las frecuencias de patrones más comunes encontrados en este trabajo y de la misma manera se realizó la comparación del patrón de escutelación más frecuente registrado en este estudio con respecto a otros reportes para C. acutus. The most frequently observed pattern (31.5%) was 4 post-occipital scales present 2 external previous nucal scales absent, and 2 posterior nucal scales present (4-2EE-2). Population ecology of Crocodylus acutus (Reptilia: Crocodylidae) in Palmasola lagoon, Oaxaca, Mexico. Abundance and population structure are important parameters to evaluate and compare the conservation status of a population over time in a given area. This study describes the population abundance and structure of Crocodylus acutus in Palmasola lagoon, Oaxaca. The field works consisted of night surveys during the new moon phase, between the 21:00 and 24:00h. These were conducted during the dry and wet seasons and counted the number of individuals to obtain population estimates. Recorded encounter rates ranged from 32 to 109.3ind./ km in 40 journeys deployed with an average time of 18 minutes browsing. The estimated population size using the Messel´s model ranged from 32.7 to 93 individuals. For both seasons, there was a marked dominance of subadults, followed by juveniles and to a lesser extent adult individuals, as well as undetermined individuals (i.e. unknown body/size/length), in both seasons. There was also a significant association with mangrove areas (26.1%) by juveniles; the subadults´s individual use of superficial water (22.7%) and mangrove areas (15.7%); meanwhile the adults were observed on superficial water (9.7%). This information contributes to our understanding of the population ecology of C. acutus in the Palmasola lagoon where the estimated population size seems to show higher values when compared to other reports in the country. This work provides three new photographic records and evidence of increase in distribution of Heloderma alvarezi based on different encounters between human activities and the displacement of this species along the central coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Until now, this species occurred only in Chiapas State, however, the new records provide information about the increase in species distribution on the coast of Oaxaca, so this has increased the number of reptiles in Oaxaca to 448 species.
The knowledge of Mesoplodon peruvianus species about its distribution and ecology is limited, because the range of the species is unknown. Mainly due to their inconspicuous behaviour. A survey was conducted from November 2014 to January 2015 along a near 80 km long transect in the central coast of Oaxaca. Additionally, based on an stranded individual at Zicatela beach, we measured it and performed a necropsy to report the probable cause of stranding. Two individuals of M. peruvianus species were observed on December 5, 2014 at about 9.3 km from the coast at 12:45 local time. The identification was clearly positive because of the black and white large individual, with an estimated size of 4 m. This is the first record of M. peruvianus in the area. On March second 2016, a carcass of a male of M. peruvianus was found stranded at Zicatela beach; was classified as scale 2 stranded individual (freshly dead). Our main pathological findings were related with the respiratory and the digestive systems. The thoracic cavity arose out of air suggesting a pneumothorax; lungs were collapsed and to the touch showed a consistency of atelectasis. In total, 18 marine mammal species have been recorded for the state of Oaxaca, this study adds a new record, confirming the presence of M. peruvianus and its distribution in the region. The collapsed lungs of the stranded individual, probably resulted from an apnea state, were related with dysbarism. In Mexico no exist the practice of necropsies in wild marine mammals, therefore, our work contributes to gather relevant information on the health of marine mammals and the threats they face.El conocimiento acerca de la distribución y ecología de Mesoplodon peruvianus es limitada debido a que su comportamiento enigmático limita el conocimiento acerca de su ámbito hogareño. Se realizaron muestreos en transectos lineales paralelos a la costa de Oaxaca de noviembre de 2014 a enero de 2015 con el fin de obtener registros de mamíferos marinos. Adicionalmente, con base en un ejemplar varado en la playa Zicatela en 2016, realizamos su medición y necropsia para indagar las posibles causas del varamiento. Dos individuos de M. peruvianus fueron avistados el 5 de diciembre de 2014 a 9.3 km de la costa alrededor de las 12:45 horas del día. La identificación se realizó por la típica coloración y se le estimó una longitud de 4 m. Estos avistamientos son el primer registro de M. peruvianus en la zona, contribuyendo al conocimiento de la especie. El 2 de marzo de 2016, se encontró el cadáver de un ejemplar macho de M. peruvianus varado en la playa Zicatela. Se le clasificó en la escala 2 (recién muerto). Nuestros principales hallazgos patológicos se relacionaron con el sistema respiratorio y el digestivo. La cavidad toracica presentó evidencia de aire sugiriendo un pneumotorax y los pulmones estuvieron colapsados y al tacto presentaron una consistencia elástica atribuida a una posible atelectasia. With the bat diversity from the state of Oaxaca being so vast, it is necessary to update species inventories and to know in depth the current level of research information on this group. We analyzed both, published and unpublished sources related to bat species from the state with the main goal of enhancing the knowledge on bats from Oaxaca. The bat fauna for Oaxaca consists of 94 species, arranged in 54 genera and 6 families.Altogether, this group represents 68.2% of the total species recorded for the country. A total of 56 bibliographic sources published between 1950 and 2012 were compiled, and from those, 53.7% represents journal articles, 29.6% bachelor theses, 9.3% chapters in books and 7.4% master theses. Topics represented with most frequency in the reviewed records were: Checklists (31.5%), Diversity (25.9%), New records (20.4%), Others (11.1%), Autecology (7.4%), and lastly, Diet and Habitat had the same percentage (1.9%). It is necessary to address issues of current relevance such as habitat fragmentation effect on bat assemblies, organism body condition, and also, possible causes that might affect species richness in the state. In addition, there are geographic locations which still lack information related to distribution of bats; and this is the case for the Putla de Guerrero region, Sola de Vega and Miahuatlán.
