Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved as a disruptive technology, impacting a wide range of human rights-related issues ranging from discrimination to supply chain due diligence. Given the increasing human rights obligations of companies and the intensifying discourse on AI and human rights, we shed light on the responsibilities of corporate actors in terms of human rights standards in the context of developing and using AI. What implications do human rights obligations have for companies developing and using AI? In our article, we discuss firstly whether AI inherently conflicts with human rights and human autonomy. Next, we discuss how AI might be linked to the beneficence criterion of AI ethics and how AI might be applied in human rights-related areas. Finally, we elaborate on individual aspects of what it means to conform to human rights, addressing AI-specific problem areas.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in organizations’ recruiting and selection procedures has become commonplace in business practice; accordingly, research on AI recruiting has increased substantially in recent years. But, though various articles have highlighted the potential opportunities and ethical risks of AI recruiting, the topic has not been normatively assessed yet. We aim to fill this gap by providing an ethical analysis of AI recruiting from a human rights perspective. In doing so, we elaborate on human rights’ theoretical implications for corporate use of AI-driven hiring solutions. Therefore, we analyze whether AI hiring practices inherently conflict with the concepts of validity, autonomy, nondiscrimination, privacy, and transparency, which represent the main human rights relevant in this context. Concluding that these concepts are not at odds, we then use existing legal and ethical implications to determine organizations’ responsibility to enforce and realize human rights standards in the context of AI recruiting.
The German Act on Autonomous Driving constitutes the first national framework on level four autonomous vehicles and has received attention from policy makers, AI ethics scholars and legal experts in autonomous driving. Owing to Germany’s role as a global hub for car manufacturing, the following paper sheds light on the act’s position within the ethical discourse and how it reconfigures the balance between legislation and ethical frameworks. Specifically, in this paper, we highlight areas that need to be more worked out in the future either through ethical conventions, corporate measures or legal measures and examine how the law can be incorporated into the existing discourse on the regulation of technologies. Based on this examination, we derive implications for future discourse and elaborate on companies’ responsibilities in developing autonomous driving technologies in an ethical sense.
The growing awareness of the influence of “what we eat” on lifestyle and health has led to an increase in the use of embedded food analysis and recognition systems. These solutions aim to effectively monitor daily food consumption, and therefore provide dietary recommendations to enable and support lifestyle changes. Mobile applications, due to their high accessibility, are ideal for real-life food recognition, volume estimation and calorific estimation. In this study, we conducted a systematic review based on articles that proposed mobile computer vision-based solutions for food recognition, volume estimation and calorific estimation. In addition, we assessed the extent to which these applications provide explanations to aid the users to understand the related classification and/or predictions. Our results show that 90.9% of applications do not distinguish between food and non-food. Similarly, only one study that proposed a mobile computer vision-based application for dietary intake attempted to provide explanations of features that contribute towards classification. Mobile computer vision-based applications are attracting a lot of interest in healthcare. They have the potential to assist in the management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, ensuring that patients eat healthily and reducing complications associated with unhealthy food. However, to improve trust, mobile computer vision-based applications in healthcare should provide explanations of how they derive their classifications or volume and calorific estimations.
The discourse on economic integration with authoritarian regimes has evolved as a key topic throughout the different disciplines of social sciences. Are sanctions and boycotts effective methods to incentivize human rights improvements? To analyze this question, we focus on the situation in China’s Xinjiang province from 2010 to 2019. In this paper, we discuss the relevance of human rights as an ethical norm within business ethics and international law. We evaluate the ongoing processes in Xinjiang from this perspective and scrutinize the interests of major players in the region, including the Central Government of the People’s Republic of China, Xinjiang’s local government, and enterprises involved in the region. Following this, we discuss which economic measures will improve the human rights situation and how these measures contribute to an improvement of the situation.
