R e s u m o : A atuação de professores surdos na educação de seus pares é um fenômeno mundial antigo, mas pouco assentado no Brasil. O professor surdo, Berthier (1803-1886, iniciou sua carreira em 1829, no Instituto de Surdos-Mudos de Paris. Trazemos aqui narrativas dele e sobre ele. Por meio dele, estão presentes durações de outros surdos, na história da sua educação. Em pesquisa bibliográfica realizada, percebemos que seu mestre, Auguste Bébian, estava disponível para imergir no ambiente de língua de sinais. Isso impulsionou Berthier à carreira docente e ao desejo de aglutinar e organizar outros surdos. Algumas de suas análises e preocupações quanto à educação de seus pares permanecem na atualidade, embora também reconheçamos que importantes avanços aconteceram, como conquistas dos movimentos sociais dos surdos. A b s t r a c t :The participation of deaf teachers in the education of deaf students is an old global phenomenon, although poorly established in Brazil. We will depict deaf educator Berthier (1803-1886) who started his career in 1829, at the Institute for the Deaf in Paris. We bring here some of his narratives and others about him. Through him, other deaf durations are present in their educational history. After a bibliographical research, we bring some narratives about his professor Auguste Bébian who began to show up with sign language. Due to this fact, Berthier got motivated to begin a docent career and to gather deaf students. Some of his analysis and concerns about education of deaf people still remain, although we also recognize that there has been significant progress, like the achievements made by the deaf social movements. En investigación bibliográfica realizada, percibimos que su maestro Auguste Bébian estaba dispuesto para ponerlo en el ambiente de la lengua de señas. Eso le impulsó a Berthier a la carrera docente y al deseo de aglutinar y organizar a otros sordos. Algunos de sus análisis y preocupaciones en cuanto a la educación de sus pares permanecen en la actualidad, aunque también reconozcamos que importantes avances se pasaron, como conquistas de los movimientos sociales de los sordos. O processo de medicalização da surdez tem na educação um campo rico de discursos e práticas. Apresentamos narrativas de professores e alunos do Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos (INES) nas quais percebemos a medicalização sendo operada. Trata-se de um recorte da pesquisa para tese em Educação que procurou compreender a inserção de surdos como professores no INES. No estudo de caso entrevistamos professores dos quadros de servidores ativos e aposentados, alunos, e realizamos pesquisas bibliográfica e documental. Esclarecemos como compreendemos a medicalização da surdez nas propostas de formação, destacando como se manifestou no INES posteriormente. Recusar a medicalização na surdez significa não impor padrões aos surdos.
Bilingual education for the deaf is always necessary. This text discusses sign languages since antiquity, passing through researchers in different times and countries. The recognition of deaf cultural and historical heritage contributes to the formation of deaf identities. Is it possible to say that Berthier and Bébian, French teachers of the 19th century, contributed to sign languages becoming an identity mark? What was the work performed by Huet in Brazil and Le Clerc in the United States? Moreover, why are French, Brazilian, and American sign languages similar? This article aims to disclose the actions that preceded William C. Stokoe in the construction of sign languages such as the work perpetrated by Berthier, who was deaf, and Bébian, first hearing teacher at the Institute of Deaf-Mute in Paris, who was bilingual, giving classes in sign language, at that time called mimicry. Historical research will be the method to achieve this goal. The work of Bébian Mimographie or Essai d'écriture mimique, propre a régulariser le langue des sourds-muets (1825) will be analyzed. It was the first attempt to graphically register sign language. Psychologists and philosophers, by the end of 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, analyzed the evolution of the term, from mimicry to polyglossy, and, finally, sign language. Some plates of Bebian's Mimography will be shown and analyzed in this paper, concluding to emphasize that French sign language had a proper grammar, differing from spoken French. Recognizing the efforts of these researchers as forerunners of the fundamentals of sign languages enhances Stokoe's linguistic research.
