National identity can be reflected by distinctive traditions, culture, and language and is found in literary works. However, the issue is that whether translated literature can maintain the national identity of the original works. Therefore, to answer this problem, this research aims to investigate categories of foreignization in the English translation of selected Indonesian children’s literature. Besides, it further unravels the applied methods in explaining the foreignization found to determine the purpose and whether it can maintain the national identity of the original. This research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected through document analysis utilizing content and thematic analysis. The research results illustrate the categories of foreignization identified in the novel, such as terms of address, exotic fruits, traditional foods, fabric and clothes, and Javanese expressions. The applied methods in explaining the foreignization, i.e., footnotes and in-text descriptions, are then studied under the readers’ response approach to determine the appropriateness and success in maintaining the national identity. This study concludes that the foreignization done by the translators to keep the identity in the works aims to introduce and promote local Indonesian culture in how people address others, the richness of local fruits, foods, and clothes. It also presents Javanese expression to specifically expresses specific terms or feeling to the wider audience and readers. Footnotes and in-text descriptions as translator notes add more illustrations of the foreignization for the readers while showing the national identity.

This paper aims to explicate and examine one of the poems written by Goenawan Mohamad, Poem No. 15, which is included in his poem and poetic essay collection entitled Tuhan dan Hal-hal yang Tak Pernah Selesai, which was translated into On God and Other Unfinished Things by Laksmi Pamuntjak by applying Reiss’ method. This method scrutinizes the translation shift, especially the expression shift and the intralinguistic criteria comprising semantic, lexical, grammatical, and stylistic features. As a creative composition and a piece of literary work that illuminates the imaginative, emotional, and intellectual experience and creativity of its author, a poem is classified in the expressive text type based on Reiss’ text-type category. The result shows that there are several intralinguistic criteria and stylistic features maintained and also modified by the translator in the English translation of Goenawan Mohamad’s Poem No. 15 in On God and Other Unfinished Things, that is done not only to preserve the aesthetic dimension of the language used in the poem but also to fulfill the expressive function of the text. By employing various translation shifts and metaphor translation to make the target text more natural, preserving the relevant aspects of the semantic content, and taking the standpoint of the author in translating the poem, the English translation of Poem No. 15 can fulfill its quality assessment required by its expressive text type.

The effort to satisfy someone else’s face wants is referred to as a politeness strategy in linguistics. These strategies are used in everyday communication. Aside from using politeness strategies in daily life dialogues, politeness strategies can also be seen in films. The object of this study is the script of a short film on Netflix entitled Two Distant Strangers. There are three key characters which are Carter, Merk, and Perri.  This research aims to discover the types of politeness strategies utilized by the characters in Two Distant Strangers and the sociological factors that influence the usage of politeness strategies in the short film. This research employs the pragmatic approach and qualitative methodology. From the analysis, the researchers found that all characters in Two Distant Strangers implemented four types of politeness strategies. The researchers also discovered that the characters’ utterances demonstrated a relationship between politeness strategies and related sociological factors. Bald on-record is the most frequently used strategy because Merk, the character who acts as a police officer, believes he is more powerful than the other characters. The sociological factor of high to low power plays a part in why Merk is not hesitant to ignore other characters’ faces and command them as he likes.
