Academic writing skills mostly involve the linguistic competence development of the students which many English Second Language learners may identify it as a challenging task. The main objective of this study is to look into various challenges encountered by English Second language students in academic writing in ordinary graduation project in the context of universities. Specifically, this research focuses on identifying the problems faced by the Arts Colleges within the University of Al Imam Al Mahdi, Sudan. The researcher used the student"s project graduation to investigate the problems encountered by the students when they used their academic writing skills. To state the obstacles recognized by the examined students in academic writing skills, the researcher employed a descriptive method. The findings of this research revealed the most problematic area faced by the students. This paper aims to identify the role of social media in learning English as a second language among Saudi Arabian students. Four year students majoring B A in English at Al Ardh college of Science and Arts for girls in Jazan University were identified as the participants of this study. The instrument of this study is a comprehensive questionnaire, which is constructed in order to explore the students’ perceptions and attitudes on using social media for English language learning. It is found that majority of the participants use social media to enhance their communication skills. Moreover, the result revealed that collaborative learning that are embedded in a social media may help improve learning activities which in turn leads to the success of learning English as a second language. Apart from that, some of the problems encountered when using social media and combined group work in the learning and teaching of English as a second language at Tertiary level are also highlighted. Most importantly, the students agreed that social media has by and large affected in their English language learning skills.
This paper aims to explore Sudanese students’ perception of using Facebook for vocabulary learning at university level. Numerous studies have undertaken exploration on the use of innovative methodologies for foreign language learning. However, the role of Facebook in such context is underexplored, culminating in this particular work. 100 first and second year students pursuing their Bachelor degree with major in English at University of AL Imam AL Mahdi of the academic year 2016-2017 were selected to take part in this study. Quantitative research method was utilized to yield perspective understanding of their involvement with the particular platform. The findings reveal that the students have positive perceptions regarding the use of Facebook for vocabulary learning. The students have also expressed the assistance of Facebook in learning new things through the useful information available on the site. This paper concludes that Facebook is a potential platform for improvement of university students’ vocabulary knowledge. The current study deals with the problems of teaching translation from the following perspectives: the significance of translation teaching, the history of translation teaching, teaching materials and teaching methods. The researcher specifically focuses on discovering the problems faced by teachers at the University of Jazan in Saudi Arabia in teaching translation theories and practice. The researcher used a descriptive method in this study to determine the problems faced by teachers in teaching translation. The researcher also distributed a questionnaire to investigate the problems the teachers encountered when teaching translation theories and practice and the questionnaire contained 12 questions. This research did not only reveal the problematic issues encountered but also proposed some practical measures to remedy them. The findings and suggestions would facilitate teachers and relevant authorities to improve the translation teaching methodology in Jazan Universityand the result must not be generalized.
This particular study explores and identifies the obstacles faced in the process of translating idioms from the Arabic into the English. In fact, one of the most challenging issues in the field of translation is the process of translating idioms from the source language into the target language with maximum success in conveying similar connotation, conceptualization, as well as shades of meaning. Therefore, in meeting the objectives outlined in this study, a purposive sample that consisted of forty students pursuing B.A. in English at the Arts College of Al Imam AL Mahdi – Sudan had been selected. Other than that, the researcher employed the descriptive approach in the study to identify and to list down the problems faced by students in applying certain strategies to translate idioms from Arabic into English. As such, a translation test was carried out as an instrument for data collection. The test was comprised of twelve Arabic proverbs based on Speake (2008) classification of Proverbs, i.e. everyday experience, traditional wisdom, and folklore, to name a few. As a result, the outcomes of the study revealed several issues that must be ironed out in order to translate idiomatic expressions appropriately and accurately. Some significant factors that had been included are cultural aspects, sociolinguistic elements, linguistic and stylistic considerations and some particular meta-lingual factors.
