Although many programs are working to reduce and eliminate the use of restraint and seclusion practices, these practices continue to be highly prevalent. A one-hour in-service training on Trauma-Informed Care and sensory-based alternatives for de-escalating behavior was presented to staff members working directly with adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral problems living in a Residential Treatment Center. Staff member attitudes regarding Trauma-Informed Care, the use of restraints, and sensory-based alternatives were measured before and after the in-service training to determine pre-existing staff attitudes and the potential influence of this training on staff attitudes.
R ecently, Hocking and Whiteford (1997) critically reviewed Fidler's Life Sryle Performance Model, challenging the clariry of theoretical construction of the model, the claims of the universali ry of application of the model, and the scholarship of Fidlet's (19%) writing. We do not concur. We find Hocking and White ford's premises to be unsupported, their arguments ullclear, and their examples taken out of comext.
What Is a Model? In rhis article, we use the term moriel to articulate a "grand theory" (Morse & Field, 1995, p. 6) A grand theory describes how the body of knowledge or conceptual toundations of occ upational therapy are linked togerher. Midrallge theories or concepts are more specitlc III nature, relating speciEc constructs associated with rhe phenomenon. In addition, we assume thar occupational therapy uses, tests, and applies theory From related disciplines ,md develops, tests, and applies theories uniquely related ro occupatIon.The use of a model to guide practice allows an occupational therapist to maintain his or her holistic perspecrive regarding rhe ellvironment, occupational performance, and occupation. The model helps to explain the reality in which human beings exist.
Theoretical ConstructionHocking and Whiteford (1997) suggested that the Lite Sryle Pedormance Model is a new model of practice 6)[ occupational therapy. As such 'its author(s) should attempt to extend the existing knowledge base" (fJ. 15')).

This study explored how individuals who have reported a history of sexual assault engage in occupations that require touch. Results indicate that sexual assault had a statistically significant effect on an individual’s participation in everyday occupations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
