Resumo Frente à necessidade de melhor compreender a relação entre estratégias de sustentabilidade e Tecnologia da Informação (TI), objetivou-se, nesta pesquisa, analisar a adoção da TI Verde nas organizações, examinando, mais especificamente, os motivos de adoção, as práticas implantadas, os benefícios percebidos e as dificuldades enfrentadas. Para tanto, foram conduzidos três estudos de caso com empresas de diferentes setores econômicos, sendo fundamental o estudo de Orlikowski (1992) para o correto enquadramento teórico da investigação. Os resultados indicam que as ações, em sua grande maioria, enquadram-se em intersecções formadas pelas três dimensões da sustentabilidade - ambiental, social e econômica - e por uma quarta dimensão, chamada de legal. Além disso, mostram que a implementação parte, inicialmente, da identificação de benefícios financeiros e operacionais, revelando que os benefícios da dimensão ambiental surgem como uma consequência positiva das mudanças provocadas em função de aspectos econômicos e legais. Espera-se que este estudo possa auxiliar executivos no planejamento e na implementação de práticas de TI Verde, assim como pesquisadores interessados nessa temática.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse how a company’s orientation enables sustainable practices in its supply chains. Specifically, it focusses on how the strategic orientation of a company may stimulate new behaviours in supply chains. Design/methodology/approach Two in-depth qualitative case studies were conducted. Each company’s orientation to sustainable supply chains was studied using cross-case analysis. Findings The organisations in this study have a market-driving (i.e. proactive) orientation instead of market-driven (i.e. responsive) behaviour. Using analysis from the process of change for sustainability and explaining some challenges faced by both organisations, findings indicate that a corporate strategy of sustainability modified the companies’ management processes, even for the company that changed its orientation during the time (i.e. sustainability was not the main strategy at first). Practical examples of actions are provided to illustrate the study’s conclusion that a corporate orientation towards sustainability is an enabling factor in developing sustainable supply chain management (SCM). Research limitations/implications Strategic management plays an important role in a company’s orientation towards sustainability – internally and throughout its supply chains. Based on the findings, future research should measure the effect of a company’s orientation on sustainable SCM. Practical implications This study contributes to the understanding of companies’ strategic orientations and explores ways to introduce sustainability into supply chains. Originality/value The paper examines an underexplored debate regarding to how strategic orientations are related to sustainable SCM, focussing on both market-driving (i.e. proactive) and market-driven (i.e. responsive) orientations.
RESUMOQuestões ambientais passaram a ser introduzidas com maior frequência nos negócios empresariais. Quanto à cadeia de suprimentos, Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) surge como novo enfoque à responsabilidade das empresas com o meio ambiente. Este artigo objetiva analisar a difusão do conceito e das práticas de GSCM no cenário brasileiro. Para tanto, foram realizadas entrevistas com especialistas do tema cadeia de suprimentos na área de Administração no Brasil. Os resultados indicam que as razões para o lento desenvolvimento do conceito podem relacionar-se com caracterís-ticas do mercado nacional, foco empresarial em aspectos internos, falta de legislação rígida e baixa pressão dos consumidores. Especialistas percebem, entretanto, boas perspectivas para o futuro das discussões da temática no País, em virtude da Política Nacional dos Resíduos Sólidos, de pressões do mercado internacional e da busca por certificação ambiental. Environmental sustainability has become increasingly important to businesses as a response to the rapid depletion of natural resources. Information Technology (IT) in particular represents a meaningful part of the environmental issues that society has been facing. Therefore, Green IT emerges as a way of combining available resources and sustainable and economic policies, thus, generating benefits for both the environment and businesses. The purpose of this paper, hence, is to explain the dynamics of Green IT implementation in organizations in light of the structurationist view of technology. We conducted a case study research based on the cases of three Brazilian companies interested in this movement. Results provide a better understanding of the relationship among technology, individuals, and organization institutional properties, thus enhancing the role played by IT teams in institutionalizing the environmental dimension of sustainability in organizations.
