The development of the tourism sector has had various effects on Balinese people’s traditional practices, including the traditional Balinese house. Since the increase of Bali’s tourist activities, the traditional houses for the Balinese that demonstrated not only a way of shelter but also complex cultural links have become objects of transformation. This transformation tended to fade its meanings and values, even though the Balinese have tried to maintain their culture as tourism resources. This phenomenon is an architectural challenge for the people to produce an innovative design of the transformed house. A descriptive exploratory approach with qualitative methods was used in this paper. Using interviews, field works and architectural examination in Taro, Kendran, and Ubud, this paper explores innovative designs that not only can accommodate traditional functions of the houses but also address the new demands of tourists. Some alternative models of pavilions have been built in many parts of the house, such as in the backyard, adjacent to old pavilions, or by demolishing the old pavilions.
The existence of vernacular architecture has given characteristics to the built environment and area. Vernacular architecture has became into a distinct personality that differentiates one location from another. Bangli architecture is one of the various kinds of architecture that evolved in Bali. Bangli architectural style has evolved from the 15th century to the 18th century AD. The characteristics of Bangli's distinctive architectural design can be seen in the main entrance building called kori agung. Today the architectural style in Bangli began to be replaced by the entry of other architectural styles in the surrounding area. For this reason, documentation efforts are needed to explore the identity and characteristics of Bangli architectural design. This article describes the identification of Bangli's architectural style characteristics through the kori agung as an object of the investigation. Data collection was carried out through field measurements, interviews and historical literacy. Architectural inspection techniques and graphical analysis are used in the analytical method, with architectural drawings and forms serving as the primary instruments. As a result, drawings, sketches and visual analyses are used to describe the architectural qualities of kori agung, which are typical of Bangli.
The design of a traditional Balinese house is based on the polarity principle, which states that the world is divided into two opposing poles. As a result, the orientation and form of space influence the physical landscape of Bali, including house plans. The topography of Bali, with the plateau running through the center of the island from west to east, causes changes in the spatial orientation system in various locations throughout the island. This condition is due to the fact that spirituality is based on geography, with high areas thought to be the abodes of the gods. As a result, the spatial orientation patterns of the island's southern and northern regions differ. Furthermore, many settlements in the eastern part of the island of Bali have unique pattern variations due to the island's unique orientation system. This individuality has an impact on local customs, such as traditional house design. To investigate this uniqueness, this article examines traditional residential patterns in several villages in eastern Bali. It investigates through the examination of buildings and exposure to developments and spatial changes associated with people's daily activities. This approach includes visual analysis and stories about community cultural activities. Geographic orientation, according to this study, has an impact on settlement patterns. Even though they are close to one another, the spatial layout of customary settlements differs.
