Construal level theory suggests that events and objects can be represented at either a higher, more abstract level involving consideration of superordinate goals, desirability, global processing, and broad categorizations or a lower, more concrete level involving consideration of subordinate goals, feasibility, local processing, and narrow categorizations. Analogously, social targets (including the self) can be represented more broadly, as members of a group, or more narrowly, as individuals. Because abstract construals induce a similarity focus, they were predicted to increase the perceived fit between social targets and a salient social category. Accordingly, placing individuals into a more abstract construal mind-set via an unrelated task increased the activation and use of stereotypes of salient social groups, stereotype-consistent trait ratings of the self, group identification, and stereotype-consistent performance relative to more concrete construal mind-sets. Thus, nonsocial contextual influences (construal level mind-sets) affect stereotyping of self and others.
Global berry production and consumption have significantly increased in recent years, coinciding with increased consumer awareness of the health-promoting benefits of berries. Among them, fresh market blackberries and raspberries are primarily harvested by hand to maintain post-harvest quality. However, fresh market berry harvesting is an arduous, costly endeavor that accounts for up to 50% of the worker hours. Additionally, the inconsistent forces applied during handharvesting can result in an 85% loss of marketable berries due to red drupelet reversion (RDR). Herein, we present a novel, tendondriven soft robotic gripper with active contact force feedback control, which leverages the passive compliance of the gripper for the gentle harvesting of blackberries. The versatile gripper was able to apply a desired force as low as 0.5 N with a mean error of 0.046 N, while also holding payloads that produce forces as high as 18 N. Field test results indicate that the gripper is capable of harvesting berries with minimal berry damage, while maintaining a harvesting reliability of 95% and a harvesting rate of approximately 4.8 seconds per berry.
Upward counterfactual thoughts identify how a prior outcome could have been better and have been shown to improve subsequent performance. Both the identification of corrective actions (content-specific effects) and the more general mobilization of effort as a result of negative affect (content-neutral effects) have been suggested to underlie performance benefits. The results of three experiments presented here indicate that counterfactual thoughts have broad benefits for performance, independent of their content and beyond the effects of planning. These benefits were consistently dependent upon the experience of negative affect, but were eliminated when negative affect could be (mis)attributed to an intervening task. This misattribution effect is consistent with the operation of a mood-as-input process in which affect informs judgments of goal progress. Overall, the findings suggest that the benefits of upward counterfactual thinking reflect more broad attempts to improve following a subjectively unsatisfactory performance.
The American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) has been impacted by the beech bark disease (BBD) complex throughout the northeastern United States for over 100 years, but the disease has been present in the Great Lakes region only for around 20 years, requiring acknowledgement of the evolving context surrounding F. grandifolia. This disease threatens to remove a foundational tree species which is especially important ecologically for wildlife habitat and mast, and as a climax successional species. We review advances in propagation techniques of F. grandifolia with the goal of addressing their use in the rehabilitative restoration of forests affected by BBD. Natural regeneration and artificial methods of propagation are addressed, along with how they may be applied for mitigation. Silvicultural interventions are discussed that may be necessary to protect and release resistant seedlings to promote persistence. An existing framework is used to explore context necessary for decision making in restoration. Nucleated seed orchards of resistant trees may currently be the most effective and practical method for introduction of BBD-resistant F. grandifolia into affected northern hardwood forests.
