This toolbox article, written by experienced clinical educators in the UK and guided by the global literature, is a practical guide to the recognition, support and rewarding of clinical education excellence. It is aimed at everyone from teachers in clinical settings to leaders of institutions that support, fund and evaluate health professional education. There are four main categories of interventions: support of individual educators; engagement of students; the promotion of clinical teachers' professionalism; and the fostering of institutional excellence. Each of these categories has a number of practical steps that are also handily summarised in a table of recommendations. I was glad to see the inclusion of recommendations in relation to peer observation of teaching, involving students in the design of learning and supporting clinical educators in their career progression through further qualifications. A second table gives examples of ways in which clinical education excellence is fostered at Imperial College London.
