The aim of this paper is to critically assess the methods used for the evaluation of wave-induced loads on ships examining analytical, numerical and experimental approaches. The paper focuses on conventional ocean going vessels and loads originating from steady state and transient excitations, namely slamming, sloshing and green water, for the latter, and including extreme or rogue waves, as well as the more occasional loads following damage. The advantages and disadvantages of the relatively simpler potential flow approaches against the more time consuming CFD methods are discussed with reference to accuracy, modelling nonlinear effects, ease of modelling and of coupling with structural assessment procedures, suitability for long term response prediction and suitability for integration within design and operational decision making. The paper also assesses the uncertainties involved in predicting wave-induced loads and the probabilistic approaches used for the evaluation of long term response and fatigue analysis. The current design practice is reviewed and the role of numerical prediction methods within the classification framework and goal based design approach discussed. Finally the suitability of current developments in prediction methods to meet the needs of the industry and future challenges is assessed.
ObjectiveTo assess incidence and burden of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections and to explore possible transmission routes.MethodsA 2-year prospective nationwide surveillance study performed in 2017 and 2018. All German paediatric departments (n=464 in 2017, n=441 in 2018) were contacted on a monthly basis to report potential cases of neonatal HSV infections. Infants with a postnatal age of ≤60 days and a positive HSV PCR or HSV culture from skin, mucous membrane, vesicles or conjunctival smear, blood or cerebrospinal fluid were included in the study.Results37 cases were analysed. 29 patients who exhibited no or only mild clinical symptoms were discharged home without organ damage or neurological abnormalities. Four patients showed significant neurological impairment, one patient required liver transplantation and two patients died during in-patient treatment. The 2-year incidence of neonatal HSV infections was 2.35 per 100 000 live births (95% CI 1.69 to 3.02) and disease-specific mortality was 0.13 per 100 000 live births (95% CI 0.04 to 0.21). Data on possible transmission routes were available in 23 cases. In 20 cases, an orofacial HSV infection was present in one or more family members. An active maternal genital HSV infection was reported in 3 cases.ConclusionNeonatal HSV infections are rare in Germany. Most infants have a benign clinical course, but some infants are severely affected. Postnatal HSV exposure may account for a considerable number of neonatal HSV infections.
The existing IMO intact stability criteria (IS-Code 2008) do not generally provide sufficient safety against dynamic stability failures such as parametric rolling for modern ships. Therefore, new stability criteria have been developed by IMO / SLF. These so-called Second Generation Stability Criteria shall ensure sufficient dynamic stability. The criteria are structured in a three level approach, where the first level consists of quite simple formulae. If a ship does not pass the first level, it is assumed that the ship is vulnerable to the phenomenon addressed, and the second level of criteria shall then be applied. This level consists of computations which are a little more complex, but they still treat the problems addressed in a strongly simplified manner. If now the ship does not pass the second level, a third level shall be applied to ensure that the ship can be designed and operated safely. This third level consists of direct calculation methods which shall be applied, however no criteria or procedures have yet been developed for this third level. We have applied the level 1 and level 2 criteria to a reference ship where a direct stability assessment has been performed during the design. The results showed extremely large scatter in the required GM-values of the criteria, and none of the criteria showed GM values roughly comparable to the direct assessment. The paper shows why the application of the criteria is challenging for the design of RoRo-ships and why a third level (direct assessment) is urgently required before the first two levels are put into force. Some conclusions are also drawn for the possible treatment of the new criteria in a stability booklet.
This paper presents the design and safety assessment of the H2Ocean: a zero-emission compressed hydrogen fuel cell propelled dinner cruise vessel for Vancouver Harbour. The design of the H2Ocean is shown, including general arrangement, resistance and powering, hydrogen fuel system, electrical system, and calculation of the extent of hazardous zones. The results of the HAZID workshop are summarized.
