Purpose -This article aims to describe the important role of e-learning in Poland and to cover experiences in transferring and localising the course, know-how about how to find strategic partners and establishing a sound infrastructure for e-learning, and guidelines as to how to get and use feedback from learners to continuously improve the quality of the course. Design/methodology/approach -The article describes the situation in the Polish library world and the process of implementation and conducting the BIBWEB online course for librarians. It also relates to how the course improves information literacy. Findings -Libraries in Poland can considerably strengthen their role as an element of the information and knowledge society by expanding their offers regarding internet access and e-learning. The situation in Germany in 1999 was comparable with the current situation in Poland. As a reaction to this, the Bertelsmann Foundation initiated an online course offer comprising three modules: "BIBWEB -internet training for libraries" (see www.bibweb.de), which met with great acceptance in Germany. For this reason, it made sense to translate the existing successful course product and adapt it to the special requirements of libraries in Poland. The Bertelsmann Foundation and its two project partners, the Warsaw University Library and the "Elektroniczna Biblioteka" (EBIB) library information service, have jointly developed such a Polish-language online course (see www.bibweb.pl) and have offered it on the internet to the specialist target group since 2003. Originality/value -This paper shows the benefits of an international educational project. Polish experiences concerning e-learning may be useful for other nations.
Thesis / purpose of the article ‒ the aim of the article is to present the situation of academic libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular emphasis on the University of Warsaw Library. Method ‒ analysis of the literature, analysis of the situation of the University of Warsaw Library in March-May 2020 on the basis of unpublished reports of heads of BUW organizational units and the author’s own observations and experiences. Results / conclusions ‒ the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic and the size of the risks associated with it cannot be compared with any previous experience of academic libraries, therefore the libraries did not have ready-made procedures and procedures. The example of the University Library in Warsaw shows that in the period of lockdown and remote work, institutions were able to learn and gather valuable experience for future use.
The University of Warsaw Library as a grantee -the successes and the failuresAbstrakt W literaturze przedmiotu stwierdza się, że biblioteki akademickie w Polsce mają zapewnione corocznie fundusze na bieżącą działalność. AbstractThe researchers state that each year the academic libraries in Poland are granted funds for their ongoing activities and the reality shows this statement to be true. However, the annually renewed budgets for the libraries are nothing more than financial means to survive that enable them neither to implement more complicated projects nor to face the challenges, which are expected from them by both their universities and the end-users. Thus the search for external funds becomes more and more common and at the same time, professionalized. The specialized grant requesting skills are extremely important as the Polish academic libraries compete for both larger and smaller grants with the other institutions of the same field or activity profile. The aim of this paper is to present the case of the University of Warsaw Library from the point of view of the staff of the Library Department of Targeted Projects and Fund Raising (established in 2014). Even before the establishment of this department, the Library had always been trying to use all the available external funds in order to run the additional projects in the retrospective cataloging, digitization, preservation, etc. The author is going to discuss both the successes and the failures in the ongoing activities of the Department, as well as the current situation of the Library as a grantee.
