In 2018, a problem that emerged in cucumber cultivation areas of southeastern Anatolia Region (Diyarbakır, Mardin, Siirt and Şırnak) was investigated. Dacus ciliatus Loew, 1862 (Diptera: Tephritidae) was found in the region causing damage to melons and watermelons. Dacus ciliatus is a polyphagous species, included on in the European quarantine list by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization, that causes economic losses in plants, especially in the Cucurbitaceae. This report of D. ciliatus is the first for agriculture and the fauna Tephritidae in Turkey.
In this paper, the authors report the first record of Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in the areas of the Republic of Cyprus not under the effective control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus. This pest was found in September 2016 on Prunus armeniaca L. in Morfou and identification of the pest was carried out by the first author.
total, 11 species belonging to 4 genera of the family Drosophilidae were identified as the result of the study and some of these are immensely invasive and threaten remarkably fruit cultures. In the results, Drosophila immigrans (Sturtevant), D. melanogaster (Meig.), D. subobscura (Collin), D. suzukii (Matsumura), Zaprionus indianus (Gupta) and Z. tuberculatus (Gupta) were found to be common. Conclusions: Most drosophilids obtained in this study are thought to be widely dispersed natural populations in Turkey biomes and two Drosophilidae species recently recorded from Turkey. Significance and Impact of the Study: This results emphasizes the importance of regional biodiversity studies with scientific collections.
This study was carried out in order to determine the insect pest species found at the orchards of Adıyaman and Siirt provinces. The studies were carried out in the Şirvan district of Siirt and Adıyaman’s the Central, Kahta and Samsat districts, where pomegranate production is intensively carried out through the years of 2017 and 2018. Samplings was carried out at the pomegranate orchards at least two weeks interval between April and October. Visual control, knock and insect rearing methods were used to obtain the insect species. According to the results from the study; a total of 42 insect species were obtained from the orders of Orthoptera (1), Thysanoptera (9), Hemiptera (18), Coleoptera (8) Lepidoptera (4) and Diptera (2). Among the identified pest species, Aphis punicae Passerini (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Apomyelois ceratoniae Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were determined as the main pest species. Dioryctria simplicella Heinemann (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Arcyophora dentula Lederer (Lepidoptera: Nolidae), Chrysobothris affinis (F.), Acmaeodera wethloi Obenberger (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) and Zaprionus indianus (Gupta) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) were determined for the first time in Turkey's pomegranate production areas.
Cotton mealybug is one of the most widespread invasive mealybug species and causes economically serious damage to vegetables, ornamentals and other agricultural crops. This study was conducted between 2018-2019 in Çukurova University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Plant Protection, Nedim Uygun Biological Control laboratory for the determination life table parameters of Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, 1898 (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on four host plants (cotton, eggplant, pepper and tomato). This study conducted in climate cabinets at 25±2ºC, 60±10% RH and 16:8 h L:D photoperiod. Thirty replicates (individual insects) were used for each host plant. Petri dishes (6 cm diameter) were used for these experiments. Eggplant was determined as the most suitable host plant, with highest values of life table parameters (R0=184 nymphs/female, rm=0.269/d, λ=1.31/d, GRR=264 nymphs/female) were obtained with eggplant.
