Lumbar epidural amyloidoma is an extremely rare cause of cauda equina compression. Clinical presentation can be nonspecific, and radiologically, it can be indistinguishable from a tumor. Diagnosis is made at histological examination of a Congo red-stained section under polarized light. Complete resection of the localized epidural amyloid mass is associated with a good prognosis.
Osteomyelitis of the odontoid process is a rare disease and Staphylococcus aureus is the usual causative organism. We present a case caused by a synergistic infection with Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus mirabilis, which has not been reported previously. A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosis, and early institution of broad antimicrobial therapy, including agents active against gramnegative organisms, is mandatory.
FDS should only be used following multidisciplinary discussion in selected patients. Further data is required regarding long-term safety, efficacy and indications.
