Regarding operative mortality, EuroSCORE II showed in this study a slightly higher discriminatory accuracy than EuroSCORE I. There were no significant differences in the calibration of the two model versions in "low-" and "moderate-risk" patients regarding early as well as mid-term mortality. Analyses in larger patient populations will contribute to further model improvement.
Considering the severity of the onset, a radical surgical treatment delivers acceptable long-term results by acceptable operative mortality. The choice of the prosthetic device seems not to be influential in long-term survival and morbidity.
Sorin Bicarbon prosthesis provides excellent clinical results and mid-term survival with very low complication rates comparable with those of other bileaflet prostheses currently in use.
