The purpose of this study was to investigate 8th students' concept images of prism, pyramid, cone and cylinder. For this purpose, students' definitions and figural recognitions of these objects were examined. Qualitative research method was used. Semi--structured interviews were conducted with 20 students chosen by maximum variation sample one of purposive sampling method. The collected qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. In finding, the properties of solids's surfaces have been found to come forward in the images. Over specialization related to pyramids' base surface and overgeneralization depend on expression of prisms were found. As a result, images depending on the prototypes could be effective in all levels of students and they could lead to misconceptions. Based on the results, in the teaching of solids it has been achieved the guiding tips. Keywords. Concept Image, Solids, Definition of Solids SUMMARY Purpose and Significance: Solids are one of the basic concepts in geometry and it is ranging from primary education to secondary education in the curriculum. In this educational process, it is important to examine if there are any problems about the concepts of solids. Because geometry education has targeted purposes and it aims to give desired gains to students. However, similar studies on elementary students are quite limited. Therefore, this study was planned to determine the structure of solids in the minds of elementary students. In this study, 8 th students' definitions and figural recognitions of prism, pyramid, cylinder and cone were examined. So, the aim of this study was to investigate 8 th students' concept images of these objects. Methods: Qualitative research method was used in the study. It was conducted with 20 students chosen by maximum variation sampling method. These students who were different academic levels, attending with their mathematics achievement and teachers' views. The data were collected by semi--structured interview. During ...

Abstract:The aim of this research is to determine levels of composing shapes of the pre-service elementary mathematics teachers and investigate the relation between some variables and levels of composing shapes. For the purpose of the research survey method was used. The sample of this research consists of 290 pre-service elementary mathematics teachers who are at 1st-2nd-3rd and 4th grades. The data of the research consist of gender, stages of grades, and cumulative average scores variables, and also the data of "The Specification Test of Levels of Composing Shapes" are included. As well as frequency and percentage calculations, the analysis of variance and test statistics were used to analyze the data. It was observed that the students' levels of composing shapes are mostly collected in the first four levels. There is a significant difference between the level of composing shapes and students' gender, their stages of grades and also their cumulative average scores.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
