Abstract:The usage of Epilobium angustifolium L. in folk medicine against prostate and dermal diseases encouraged us to investigate pBR322 DNA-binding ability, biological activities and chemical composition of wild growing Epilobium angustifolium L.'s methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous extracts from Canakkale, Turkey. DNA-binding activity was studied by agarose gel electrophoresis and chemical composition via GC, GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS, ICP-MS, and AAS. A detailed literature survey indicates no data on pBR322 plasmid DNA interaction of Epilobium species which is an important criterion for being a potential anticancer agent. Antibacterial and antifungal effects were tested against 11 bacteria and 3 fungi and compared with ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and ketoconazole by agar well diffusion techniques. Total phenolic content was found by Folin-Ciocalteu method, and antioxidant activity was obtained by DPPH and Fe(II)-FZ (ferric-ferrozine) methods. This plant is rich in flavonoids, hormones, fatty acids, and phenolic acids. Si, K, Mg, P, and Mn were the main inorganic elements. Epilobium angustifolium L. with its high DNA-binding activity and rich chemical composition can be an excellent potential anticancer, antimicrobial and antioxidant prodrug.
A series of novel positional oximes (2a-2d), O -methyl oxime ethers (3a-3d), and O -benzyl oxime ethers (4a-4d) were synthesized in high yields starting from their corresponding methyl 3-, 4-, 6-, and 13-keto tetradecanoates. The synthesized compounds were characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, FT-IR, mass, and elemental analyses for their structures and ( E) /( Z) isomerizations. Their DNA binding abilities were investigated in vitro by agarose gel electrophoresis. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were tested also in vitro against eleven bacterial strains and three fungal strains. The relationship between the structure and the mentioned biological activities was discussed.Compound 2a showed good antibacterial activity against five types of bacteria. Compounds 2b, 2c, 2d, and 4d were effective against several microorganisms. Among these, 2a showed the best DNA binding, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. Therefore, 2a can be a pro-drug as an anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal agent.
A series of some 3-13 monohydroxy eicosanoic acid isomers were evaluated for their antielastase, antiurease and antioxidant activities for the first time in this study. All the test compounds exhibited antielastase, antiurease and antioxidant activities. According to the obtained results the hydroxy eicosanoic acid isomers locating in the middle and close to the middle of the chain showed higher antielastase, antiurease and antioxidant activities rather than that of the other isomers. Therefore, 3-13 monohydroxy eicosanoic acid isomers can be used in agriculture, pharmacy and cosmetic industries due to their excellent antielastase, antiurease and antioxidant activities
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
