In this study, it is aimed to reveal the effects of the concept of sustainability on product design and sustainable design methods through the focus on urban furniture. In line with this purpose, the approaches to the design processes and methods of urban furniture based on the 17 basic development goals of sustainability are discussed through stakeholders such as municipalities, companies and designers involved in this industry. In this way, it is aimed to determine the current perspectives of the sector and to reveal information that can be a reference for future studies. The research was carried out through interviews within the scope of urban furniture manufacturers, design groups and municipalities in the Marmara region of Turkey. As a result of this research, the approaches of the urban furniture production sector to the concept of sustainable design were examined through discussion and evaluation, and findings and suggestions were presented.
Designers see culture as a starting point for designing meaningful products that appeal to users. Culture has a dynamic structure that is constantly affected by social changes. This research examines how socio-cultural factors are perceived, analysed and transferred by design students. The design process is aimed to identify the complex or challenging and on the contrary clearly understandable aspects. In the first stage of the research, the ideas of the established cultural images, culturally influential designs and designers who use culture as a starting point were determined through 24 industrial design students. The ideas of the students were asked about design and identity in a particular geographic area, they were also asked to explain their ideas about traditional forms and draw forms of them by sketches. The results are presented together with visual examples. The common points of how the culture-oriented design approach is used by designers in the product design process and the frequent mistakes, approaches and examples of projects in this process are revealed.

The development of the sustainability concept began primarily in the European continent. Its integration into lifestyles and with it, the increase of social awareness, were formed with the contributions of various NGOs. In this context, we see the contribution of integrating sustainable design principles into the academic program. The factors that are important in sustainable design such as lower usage of raw materials, environmentally friendly materials, convenience in production and assembly, energy consumption, and ease of recycling are conveyed to the students through various courses in the academic program. A case study was carried out to analyze the transfer of sustainable design principles to the education process and its implications. This research was carried out in three stages: creating a theoretical framework, fieldwork, and practical work with students who attended the Sustainable Design course. According to the results students create new designs before recycling waste products within the scope of repurposing concept.
