92', yield 300 mg. Elution with 5% ether gave a glass which could not be crystallized but which was shown to contain 9,lOdibenzylanthracene (17). The glass was purified by precipitation from ether with pentane and sublimation a t 300' under reduced pressure (0.01 mm). The resulting glass registered as a single spot on tlc (20y0 ether-pentane on silica): uv Xmsx 270 mp (e 58,000) [lit.L2g Xmax 266 mr, (e 84,OOO)l: nmr 6 4.70, 5.0 (m, CH2Ar), and 7.2 (m, ArH); yield 242 mg (67%).Diphenylmethane and Acetyl p-Toluenesulfonate (2).-Diphenylmethane (2.5 g, 15 mmol) was heated with acetyl ptoluenesulfonate (2) (10 g, 47 mmol) a t 130' for 2 hr. Work-up in the usual manner gave an oil (2.2 g) whose composition, as judged from the nmr and tlc, was 90% diphenylmethane. The remaining 10% (seven distinct spots on tlc) appeared from the nmr (singlets a t S 2.0, 2.15) to contain some acetylated material.
