This prospective experimental study was done in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical Universiry, Dhaka from 1st January 2008 to 31st July 2008 to observe the effects of ADL instructions on patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. A total of 60 patients with OA – knee were selected. Out of 60 patients 28(46.7%) were female and 32(53.3%) were male. The female to male ratio1.14:1. Age distribution varied from >40 years to <70 years with a mean age was 53.58 ± 6.86 years. Maximum patients 17(28.3%) belonged to age group of 56-60 years in both sexes and house wives were maximum in number 26 (43.3%).They were divided into two groups, 30 patients treated with therapeutic exercise plus NSAID and another 30 patients were with therapeutic exercise, NSAID and ADL. In both groups patients were treated for six weeks. In the present study, the group of patients who received NSAID, Exercise and ADL instructions improved more significantly than those who were not advised ADL instructions but received NSAID and exercise only (95% CI: 4.30 to 9.36, P = 0.001) .So, from the present study it may be concluded that activities of daily living instructions play a role to improve the symptoms of OA knee. Backgroundand Introduction: Physical rehabilitation is vital for patients to regain maximum function. Approximately 80% of people with a disability live in developing countries, where they face multiple challenges in rehabilitation. The goal of the study was to conduct an analysis of indoor rehabilitation programs based on the demographics and medical conditions of the admitted patients and to relate to the available basic health and rehabilitation facilities.MethodsThis was a mixed method study conducted in an inpatient rehabilitation ward of a tertiary level academic university hospital in a developing country. All admitted patients who stayed for a period of minimum two weeks were included in the study. Demographic and clinical data were obtained by means of a retrospective medical record review utilizing a standardized data extraction form. The study was further strengthened by an online literature search for the available documents for analysis, relation, and discussion.ResultsAmong the 1,309 admitted patients was male- female ratio was 10:7, with the majority (31.4%) cases falling between the ages of 46 and 60yrs. Rehabilitation outpatient department was the principal mode of admission (78%), and musculoskeletal and neurological conditions represented the maximum number (79.8%). Majority of patients (60.8%) were discharged home on completion of the rehabilitation program with a large number of patients who were absconded. Poor health budget allocation and lack of prioritization of the rehabilitation sector face multiple challenges, including the rehabilitation team functioning resources, space crisis for expansion which was further impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.ConclusionsThe country's current health-related rehabilitation process and socio-demographic variables have a negative relationship. There was a large number of missing data in the medical records and many patients were lost prematurely from the indoor rehabilitation program. Musculoskeletal disorders were common, and the majority of patients were discharged home once the program was completed.
The study aimed to evaluate the association of recreational (habitual) physical activities with the osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in the female. The case-control study was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka in the year 2016 and 2017. The total participants were 174 female selected purposively with the age range of 40 – 70 years, among them 87 were the cases with OA of the knee, and the same number of the same age group were included as the control without OA of the knee. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. High level of physical activities (20 or more miles per week) was associated with OA of the knee, whereas moderate level of physical activities (10-20 miles/per week) and low level of physical activities (<10miles/per week) had no significant association with the OA of the knee. This study reveled the relationship of the physical activity and OA of the knee. Continue physical activity according to the public health guideline, may eliminate this such physical problem for the general health promotion and particularly to prevent the OA of the knee.
