Africa"s most populous country, Nigeria is presently embroidered in security crisis which has become an unending challenge, not only by defying security measures but making a mockery of the efforts of the law enforcement agents and the millions of naira annually budgeted by government as security votes. This study therefore examines the predisposing factor in security crisis and the role of the law enforcement agents in the quest to stem its rising tide. The theory of class struggle as propounded by Karl Marx and enthused by Friedrich Engels was used to explain the topic under investigation. The quantitative technique which involved the use of questionnaire was employed to gather data from 831 respondents in Benin metropolis and this was analysed with the use of the simple percentage and inferential statistics. The study revealed that ethnoreligious conflicts, weak security and judicial system, unemployment, poverty, porous borders, lopsided development and marginalization were some of the predisposing factors in insecurity in Nigeria. The study maintains that there is the need to strengthen the security and judicial system, create jobs and employment opportunities for youth while also being fair and equitable in the provision of infrastructure in the various geo-political zones.
Migration and modern slavery are global problems which affect developed and developing nations alike. However, the magnitude of the menace varies; with less developed countries facing more of the challenges. There are many reasons responsible for the increase in the rate of migration and the attendant modern slavery which are replete in literature. Today, some 30 million people worldwide live in slavery and yet slavery is strictly prohibited by both Nigerian and international laws (Global slavery index, 2016). Why is there such a gap between law and practice? What can be done to improve the contribution of national law and criminal justice norms and institution towards the eradication of modern slavery? Unfortunately, little or no work has been done to indicate the relevance of law and criminal justice as disposing factors in migration and modern slavery in Nigeria. These are some of the key issues which this paper seeks to address. The study revealed that not only was the public unaware of the existing laws against modern slavery, they were also unanimous in their views that even if these laws existed, they were not effective, as the criminal justice system has not impacted positively on the issue under study. Consequently, the study suggests that the government, non-governmental organizations and media outfits should collaborate in ensuring that the existence of the law on modern slavery is made known to the general public. In addition, the law and the criminal justice should be strengthened in order to make it more effective.
This study was initiated to socio-legally investigate the perception of dying and death amongst adults in Ebo Community in Southern, Nigeria. In most traditional communities, it would appear that the perception of people about death is wrapped up in their fear of the inevitable occurrence. Little wonder that discussions and preparations are not made towards it. The study which is both exploratory and qualitative employed a cross-sectional design. A combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques was utilized to collect data from the respondents. A total of 100 respondents were quantitatively sampled while 20 in-depth interviews were also conducted. A descriptive analysis of the quantitative data collected was undertaken using frequency distribution while the manual content analysis was used for qualitative data collected from the field work. Findings from this investigation showed that almost all deaths in Ebo Community in Southern Nigeria were attributed to witchcraft and that the people see death as a frightening and scaring phenomenon that should neither be talked about nor legally prepared for. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made that the media, church and other credible agents of socialization should engage in enlightenment campaign programmes to create awareness that dying and death are not caused by witchcraft and besides, people should feel free to discuss and prepare legally for this natural inevitability.
