Feature selection is a preprocessing technique that identifies the key features of a given problem. It has traditionally been applied in a wide range of problems that include biological data processing, finance, and intrusion detection systems. In particular, feature selection has been successfully used in medical applications, where it can not only reduce dimensionality but also help us understand the causes of a disease. We describe some basic concepts related to medical applications and provide some necessary background information on feature selection. We review the most recent feature selection methods developed for and applied in medical problems, covering prolific research fields such as medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, and DNA microarray data analysis. A case study of two medical applications that includes actual patient data is used to demonstrate the suitability of applying feature selection methods in medical problems and to illustrate how these methods work in real-world scenarios.
The increase in awareness of people towards their nutritional habits has drawn considerable attention to the field of automatic food analysis. Focusing on self-service restaurants environment, automatic food analysis is not only useful for extracting nutritional information from foods selected by customers, it is also of high interest to speed up the service solving the bottleneck produced at the cashiers in times of high demand. In this paper, we address the problem of automatic food tray analysis in canteens and restaurants environment, which consists in predicting multiple foods placed on a tray image. We propose a new approach for food analysis based on convolutional neural networks, we name Semantic Food Detection, which integrates in the same framework food localization, recognition and segmentation. We demonstrate that our method improves the state of the art food detection by a considerable margin on the public dataset UNIMIB2016 achieving about 90% in terms of F-measure, and thus provides a significant technological advance towards the automatic billing in restaurant environments.
Dry eye is a symptomatic disease which affects a wide range of population and has a negative impact on their daily activities. Its diagnosis can be achieved by analyzing the interference patterns of the tear film lipid layer and by classifying them into one of the Guillon categories. The manual process done by experts is not only affected by subjective factors but is also very time consuming. In this paper we propose a general methodology to the automatic classification of tear film lipid layer, using color and texture information to characterize the image and feature selection methods to reduce the processing time. The adequacy of the proposed methodology was demonstrated since it achieves classification rates over 97% while maintaining robustness and provides unbiased results. Also, it can be applied in real time, and so allows important time savings for the experts.
Varroa destructor is a parasite harming bee colonies. As the worldwide bee population is in danger, beekeepers as well as researchers are looking for methods to monitor the health of bee hives. In this context, we present a preliminary study to detect parasites on bee videos by means of image analysis and machine learning techniques. For this purpose, each video frame is analyzed individually to extract bee image patches, which are then processed to compute image descriptors and finally classified into mite and no mite bees. The experimental results demonstrated the adequacy of the proposed method, which will be a perfect stepping stone for a further bee monitoring system.
Image analysis is a prolific field of research which has been broadly studied in the last decades, successfully applied to a great number of disciplines. Since the apparition of Big Data, the number of digital images is explosively growing, and a large amount of multimedia data is publicly available. Not only is it necessary to deal with this increasing number of images, but also to know which features extract from them, and feature selection can help in this scenario. The goal of this paper is to survey the most recent feature selection methods developed and/or applied to image analysis, covering the most popular fields such as image classification, image segmentation, etc. Finally, an experimental evaluation on several popular datasets using well-known feature selection methods is presented, bearing in mind that the aim is not to provide the best feature selection method, but to facilitate comparative studies for the research community.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
