Well ER-5-3#3 was drilled approximately 30 meters north of the first 2 boreholes in February 2001. A 66.0-centimeter hole was drilled and cased off to the depth of 36.6 meters, then the main 25.1-centimeter-diameter hole was drilled to a total depth of 548.6 meters in alluvium. A slotted stainless-steel tubing string was installed in the saturated alluvium.A preliminary composite, static water level was measured at the depth of 282.6 meters, prior to development and hydrologic testing.Detailed lithologic descriptions and stratigraphic assignments are included in the report. These are based on composite drill cuttings collected every 3 meters, and 120 sidewall samples taken at various depths below 91 meters in Wells ER-5-3 and ER-5-3#2, supplemented by geophysical log data. The wells penetrated Quaternary/Tertiary alluvium to the depth of 622.4 meters, and an 8.5-meter-thick basalt flow was encountered within the alluvium. Tertiary tuff was penetrated to the depth of approximately 1,425.9 meters, where the top of the lower carbonate aquifer was tagged in Well ER-5-3#2.vi This page intentionally left blank.
Introduction section which formerly included a description of the NTS and its environment, the NTS mission, and history of the site. The environmental description of the site was expanded to include climatology and cultural resources and was placed in a stand-alone appendix. A description of NTS missions and its history were placed in the Executive Summary. There are five major portions or divisions of the NTSER. The summary below is provided so the reader can see the overall organization and content of the report. Summary of SectionsExecutive Summary -This portion of the report is meant to provide the reader with: (1) the purpose of the NTSER, (2) the current mission and history of the NTS, (3) a description of possible radiological dose pathways to the public, (4) a description of any radiological releases, (5) the estimated radiological dose to the public resulting from site operations, (6) a description of any non-radiological releases from the site, (7) a summary of any environmental incidents of noncompliance that occurred during the year and actions taken in response to them, (8) a description of the management system used to ensure that work is conducted in compliance with environmental and public health protection, and (9) a summary of any significant environmental program or effort.Compliance Summary -The purpose of this portion (Section 1.0) of the NTSER is to: (1) present those federal, state, and local environmental regulations which govern how operations are conducted on the NTS in order to ensure that the environment and the public are protected; (2) present in tabular form a concise summary of how NTS operations complied with these regulations during the year; and (3) direct the reader to subsequent sections of this NTSER where environmental activities and programs are described in more detail. This section is divided into multiple subsections based on the type of regulations presented (e.g., water quality regulations are presented in a separate subsection from historic preservation regulations). There are a total of 12 sections within the Compliance Summary (Sections 1.1 -1.12), the last section being a list of all active environmental permits. Environmental Monitoring and Compliance Activities -This portion constitutes the main body of the NTSER.It is divided into multiple sections (Sections 2.0 -12.0) which present the reporting year's environmental compliance activities related to monitoring and protecting the public, air, water, biota, cultural resources, and sensitive species and ecosystems on the NTS. These are the sections of the NTSER which are specifically referenced in the Compliance Summary, Section 1.0 and which support the compliance determinations presented in summary tabular form in Section 1.0. Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 335: Area 6 Injection Well and Drain Pit, is located in Area 6 of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). CAU 335 consists of three Corrective Action Sites (CASs) currently listed in Appendix 111 of the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO, 1996):. CAS 06-20-01, Drums; Oil Waste; Spill. CAS 06-20-02,20-inch Cased Hole. CAS 06-23-03, Drain Pit CAU 335 was closed in accordance with the FFACO and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection-approved Corrective Action Plan for CAU 335 (US. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Operations Office [NNSA/NV], 2002). CAU 335 was closed by implementing the following corrective actions:. CAS 06-20-01 is a spill site associated with the storage of material that was pumped out of CAS 06-20-02 and placed into 208-liter (55-gallon) drums. The drums were transported to the NTS Area 5 Hazardous Waste Accumulation Site in 1991 (US. Department of Energy, Nevada Operation Office [ D O E N ] , 2000). Any spills associated with CAS 06-20-01 were addressed and considered part of CAS 06-20-02. CAS 06-20-01 was closed by taking no further action.. CAS 06-20-02 is a 20-inch cased hole that was used for disposal of used motor oil, waste water, and debris for an undetermined amount of time (D O E N , 2000). This site was closed in place with administrative controls. Warning signs were posted along the CAS perimeter and land use restrictions implemented to prevent intrusive activities at the site.. CAS 06-23-03 consists of a drain pit that was used as a depository for effluent waste from truck-washing facilities from 1960 through 1991 (D O E N , 2000). This site was closed in place with administrative controls. The exposed piping in the drain pit berm was grouted closed and the drain pit backfilled with approximately 190 cubic meters (250 cubic yards) of clean fill. Warning signs were posted along the CAS perimeters and land use restrictions implemented to prevent intrusive activities at the site.
