Learning English as a foreign language, especially in a formal context, leads the students to have their own strategy in order to achieve the objective of learning. The strategy is considered as a helpful way to learn English better. After all, every student has their own strategy in learning. Thus, this study presents an exploration of English language learning strategies used by management and engineering students of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia (UTI). Subjects of the research were 70 students who take English for Business (EFB) subject majoring management and engineering study program. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. Data were then analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The result of this study gained a platform of learning strategies used by students. As a result, Management and Engineering students showed almost the same strategy in learning English in a class.
Covid-19 pandemic becomes global issue that gives global impact in all sectors especially in educational one. The Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia make a policy in which all education sectors are shifted from face-to-face learning into online learning. This policy is well-responded by one of private universities in Lampung. The researcher conducted a research to response this policy. The objective of this study is identify the impact of online learning toward students’ academic performance on Business Correspondence course. Participants of this study are 40 students (14 male and 26 female) who enrolled Business Correspondence course at English Education study program of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through questionnaire that consists of 22 statements and open-ended interview. The result showed that online learning has positive impact on students’ academic performance in term of learning motivation, learning achievement and learning engagement. Participants also showed that conducting online learning is relevant during pandemic. Furthermore, flexibility, accessibility, learning autonomy, and boosting students’ achievement become the strengths of conducting online learning. However, financial issue and bad internet access become problems that hamper online learning.
Facing industrial revolution 4.0 requires university students to provide themselves with a skill that they can use to compete with machines or computers. One of the skills is negotiation which involves mastering language, especially English as a means of international communication. However, learning English as a foreign language is not as easy as it seems. The students need to use a proper learning media which match their characteristics as digital native and motivate them in learning English such as multimedia. By using multimedia, the students will not only learn about language but also the skill about how to use the media or a computer to come up with industrial revolution 4.0. Thus, the researchers who are English lecturers aimed to encourage students in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia (UTI) to use more web-based medium as a medium in learning English in a class, exclusively Powtoon. This research used a qualitative method since it disclosed how UTI students use Powtoon in a class and what their opinion toward Powtoon for learning English. During the research, the students used Powtoon in a class as a presentation medium for a half-semester because after mid-test they were divided into 13 groups to present the topics given by the lecturer. For each meeting, there were 2-3 groups presentation. At the end of the semester, the students were given questionnaire related to multimedia usage and responded that they felt motivated in learning English by using technology especially Powtoon. As a result, using a web-based medium in learning English can increase not only student’s ability to language but also technology.
The shifting of English language learning from conventional way to technology-based learning is popular nowadays. It is necessary to identify the effect of using technology towards the students’ performance. One of technology that currently well-known is Vlog. This study aims at identifying the improvement of the students’ performance after learning English using Vlog. The participants of this study is 40 students majoring English Education Department of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. They enrolled in Transactional Conversation subject where practicing English through vlog was carried out. The design of this research is quantitative study in which the researcher employed pre-test and post-test. The result of pre-test and post-test was analyzed by using statistics descriptive and statistics inferential (Mann-Whitney U). The result of analysis is there is significant improvement towards students’ performance after learning English by using Vlog.
The objective of this study is to uncover the students’ attitude toward vlogging activities in improving students’ speaking ability. Participants of this study are 40 students majoring English Education who enrolled in transactional conversation subject at Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. Research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Data were gained through questionnaire exposing students’ attitude toward the subject and students’ attitude toward using vlog to support learning process. There were 11 indicators with 32 questionnaire items. The results of this study reveal that Vlog helps students to understand the materials, improve students’ learning achievement, motivation, creativity, and engagement, provide interesting learning activities, efficient learning, effective learning, and lead students to be confident, independent and critical.
