Knowledge-intensive Processes are difficult to support by traditional workflow oriented Business Process Management approaches. Reasons lie in in ad-hoc decisions and unpredictable workflows that come with them. Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is a paradigm for the management of knowledge-intensive processes that has recently drawn attention in industry and the scientific community. This development led to the standardization of CMMN as a notation for process models for the ACM implementation. This study assess the availability of method support for the use of ACM and the fitness of CMMN for fulfilling the modeling requirements in this context based on a systematic literature review. As a result missing method support, CMMN shortcomings as well as suggestions for the implementation of ACM in combination with CMMN are discussed.
Ontology design patterns (ODPs) provide best-practice solutions for common or recurring ontology design problems. This work focuses on content ODPs, which form small ontologies themselves and thus can be subject to ontology quality metrics in general. We investigate the use of such metrics for content ODP evaluation in terms of metrics applicability and validity. The quality metrics used for this investigation are taken from existing work in the area of ontology quality evaluation. We discuss the general applicability to content ODP of each metric considering its definition, ODP characteristics, and the defined goals of ODPs. The research process presented in this paper has two phases. In the first phase, we conducted a literature research in the area of metrics for assessing ontology quality. The second phase consisted of a two-step evaluation of the ontology metrics identified in the literature analysis. During the first step, we investigated whether the metrics are appropriate to differentiate between content ODPs of different quality. Metrics that proved to be applicable were calculated for a random set of 14 content ODPs. In the second step, a controlled experiment, the quality indicated by the metric value was contrasted with the perception of ontology engineers; that is, do 'measured quality' and 'perceived quality' match?.
In the KOSMOS-2 project, a smart learning approach in form of a modern portal for students at Universities has been developed, called "MeinKosmos". An important question from the point of view of universities and teachers is what the quality of such new tools are or what their benefits are. This article describes the evaluation approach defined in the KOSMOS-2 project for the "MeinKosmos" learning portal, and the results of using the approach in an undergraduate degree program. The focus of the evaluation is on the learning success of the students and the quality of the meta-search.
