An important part of current research regarding online risks is aimed at analysing cyber aggression according to its frequency and type. By contrast, there is less scientific knowledge available on risk perception, the analysis of its components, and the measurement and impact on the behaviour of minors on the Internet. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to establish a classification of minors based on their perception of risk, digital consumption habits, family and/or educational protection factors, and the flow of communication. A structured questionnaire was used from a sample of 865 minors aged 10 to 17 from the Autonomous Region of Madrid. Data were processed using SPSS 15.0 and SPAD 5.0. After a factor and classification analysis was conducted, seven different groups were obtained. The predominant profile, in 42% of the cases, is that of a ‘prudent person’, characterized by a high perception of risk, not spending an excessive amount of time on the Internet, avoiding unsafe behaviour, talking with parents about online difficulties, receiving advice, and having clear rules on Internet use. The perception of risk is shown as a relevant construct in relation to other indicators such as child-rearing techniques used by parents, the time children spend on Internet, dependency on the device, and the type of digital behavior involved. Una parte importante de las investigaciones actuales sobre riesgos online están encaminadas a analizar las ciberagresiones, su frecuencia y forma. En cambio, hay menos acumulación de conocimiento científico centrado en la percepción de riesgo, el análisis de sus componentes y la medición e impacto sobre la actuación de los menores en la red. Por ello, el objetivo principal del estudio es establecer una clasificación de menores a partir de su percepción de riesgo, hábitos de consumo digital, factores de protección familiares y/o educativos y flujos de comunicación. Se ha aplicado un cuestionario estructurado a una muestra de 865 menores, de 10 a 17 años de la Comunidad de Madrid. Los datos se han procesado con SPSS 15.0 y SPAD 5.0. Tras un análisis factorial y de clasificación se han obtenido siete grupos diferenciados. El perfil predominante, en un 42% de los casos, es el de «prudentes», caracterizado por tener una alta percepción de riesgo, no pasar excesivo tiempo en la red, evitar comportamientos no seguros, conversar con los padres sobre las dificultades online, recibir consejos y tener normas claras sobre el uso de Internet. La percepción de riesgo se muestra como un constructo relevante en relación a otros indicadores como la intervención educativa de los padres, el tiempo que se pasa en Internet, la dependencia del dispositivo y el tipo de comportamiento digital.
BackgroundThe aim is to investigate the factors that might be associated with the presence of induced abortion (IA) in women prostitutes in Asturias (Spain).Methodology/Principal FindingsCross-sectional descriptive study by self-completion questionnaire of 212 women prostitutes who attended the three Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics in Asturias, between January–December 2003. The questionnaire was designed to investigate the women's perceived knowledge (what they claimed to know), their real knowledge (what they really knew), the use of contraceptive methods and socio-demographic variables. Multivariate analysis was carried out. 92% of the participants were immigrants. 76% were practising at brothel. 37.6% (95%CI:30.7–44.4%) reported to have undergone at least one IA during their life. According to the logistic regression the “presence of IA” was directly associated with the variables “number of pregnancies”(OR:65.82;95%IC:7.73–560.14) and “years of practising prostitution”(OR:1.13;95%CI:0.99–1.29); and inversely associated with “children”(0 = no children;1 = one or more children; OR:0.005;95%CI:0.000–0.057), “women's age”(OR:0.89;95%CI:0.82–0.97) and “real contraceptive knowledge”(OR:0.50; 95%CI:0.34–0.75). Married women were more likely to have undergone an IA (OR:2.74;95%IC:1.05–7.13). No association with “perceived contraceptive knowledge” was found.Conclusions/SignificanceThe characteristics more closely linked to the reproductive history of the women (such as “pregnancies”, “children”), together with the “real contraceptive knowledge” and the “time practising prostitution” explain the presence of IA better than factors more closely linked to the conditions in which the women practise prostitution (“place of activity”, “other activities compatible with prostitution”, “use of safe method in commercial relation”). It is possible that IA is being used as a birth control method, hypothesis suggested by the inverse association observed between the variable “children” and the “presence of IA”. Therefore, the promotion of the use of safe contraceptive methods should be a high-priority. If the real contraceptive knowledge was measured correctly, all strategies to increase it would be justified because it was inversely associated with the presence of IA.
En la era digital es imprescindible replantearse el papel educativo de la familia. Las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación han convulsionado las relaciones interpersonales y familiares. En este ensayo se analizan tres componentes fundamentales en referencia a la educación digital de los menores: la familia como mediadora del proceso educativo de los hijos; la brecha digital como disponibilidad de contar con la capacidad y habilidad suficientes para utilizar los servicios digitales y la autoridad como la tutorización de los menores basada en la capacidad competente adquirida por los adultos de referencia, normalmente los padres, a lo largo de su vida, que los faculta para ejercer su autoridad en todos los ámbitos, desde el moral hasta el de conocimientos. Se llega a la conclusión de que la familia tiene que afrontar una doble visión de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación que compromete muchos de los valores básicos de su función formadora con los hijos. Esta doble visión viene representada por el polo positivo: el avance, la facilitación de tareas, el desarrollo de sistemas más eficientes, y por el polo negativo: la involución, la facilitación de nuevos riesgos, mayor vulnerabilidad personal y social. El éxito pasa por llevar a cabo una mediación familiar óptima, romper las trabas que produce la brecha digital y confluir ambas cuestiones en la promoción de unas competencias mínimas por parte de los padres para ejercer adecuadamente la autoridad. © Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Sociales.
Smartphone use influences teenagers’ behaviors and lifestyles, not always in a positive way. Abuse and dependence on the use of this device is what has led to the study of nomophobia. The objective of this research is to measure the level of nomophobia in adolescents, and to study their digital consumption habits. The study seeks to analyze the relationships between risk of nomophobia, digital behavior, age and smartphone use. A structured questionnaire has been applied to a sample of 850 students aged 12 to 16. The data has been analyzed with SPSS and SPAD. Multivariate statistical characterization, one of the most recent data mining techniques, has been used to study differences in teenagers’ behaviors according to their risk of nomophobia, and to find related explanatory variables. Teenagers’ nomophobia risk ranges from mild to moderate, showing a relation with age, academic performance and intensity of use of mobile social networking apps. The risk of nomophobia responds to differences in students’ digital, social, relational and educational behaviors, and exhibits differences according to academic performance, age, gender, motivation and self-perception.
