A porous implant material with adequate pore structure and the appropriate mechanical properties for bone ingrowth has long been sought. This article presents details of the development, characterization and in vivo evaluations of powder metallurgy-processed titanium samples exhibiting a dense core with an integrated porous surface for biomedical applications. A space-holder method was applied to investigate the effects of different percentages and particle sizes of the urea on bone neoformation in 30 rabbits. The samples were previously characterized using scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing. After 8 and 12 weeks of implantation, bone ingrowth was histologically and histometrically analyzed and push-out testing was performed. This study demonstrated that the association of a dense core integrated with the greatest number of interconnected pores of the smallest size is a promising biomaterial for bone tissue engineering. This sample exhibits appropriate mechanical properties combined with increased bone ingrowth, providing enhanced resistance to displacement.
Cystic odontoma is a rare entity, which is characterized by the association of a cyst with complex/compound odontoma. The aim of this study was to report the case of a 5-year-old male patient diagnosed previously with Hodgkin's lymphoma and treated successfully with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, who developed a mandibular odontogenic lesion. Physical examination revealed a swelling on the right side of the mandible. Radiographically, a well-defined radiolucent area surrounded by radiopaque material was observed. An incisional biopsy was performed and microscopic analysis showed a cystic lesion consisting of an atrophic epithelium comprising 2-3 cell layers and the absence of inflammation in the cystic capsule. The cyst was decompressed and the lesion was removed after 3 months of follow-up. Microscopic analysis of the surgical specimen showed a cystic hyperplastic epithelium surrounded by an intense chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate, which was in close contact with mineralized tissue resembling dentin and cementum. The final diagnosis was cystic odontoma. Since chemotherapy can affect the growth and development of infant teeth, a relationship between chemotherapy-associated adverse events and cystic odontoma is suggested in the present case.
Objective: There is a great concern with biosafety nowadays, given the knowledge of diseases and potential complications in health practice. In this context, this review aims to provide information capable of improving good health practices and consequent minimization of operational risks in dental practice. Material and Methods: A review of biosafety literature was carried out covering the last seven years considering the health descriptors: "odontologia" and "biossegurança" / "Contenção de Riscos Biológicos" in the following Databases: Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde - BVS (Virtual Health Library); Bibliografia Brasileira de Odontologia - BBO (- Brazilian Bibliography of Dentistry ) and Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde – LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences); and with the descriptors "dentistry" and "biosecurity" / "Containment of Biohazards" in the Databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health Search (PubMed) and SCOPUS. Results: There were found 33 articles that met the criteria established for this research. Conclusion: From the literature, it is concluded that the evaluation of procedures, knowledge and constant study, the improvement of procedures and joint action of all staff is of fundamental importance so that health improvement can go beyond health care and the resolution of a specific problem.KeywordsDentistry; Containment of biohazards; Biosafety.
The addition of potential remineralizing agents into bleaching gels might play an important role in maintaining the microhardness of sound enamel and in inducing remineralization of artificially demineralized enamel right after bleaching, and the remineralizing action of human saliva might minimize the deleterious effects of bleaching gels on enamel. Clinical significance: The incorporation of calcium into HP bleaching gel might be beneficial for the initial phases of the bleaching procedure.
