Effect of Incorporation of Remineralizing Agents into Bleaching Gels on the Microhardness of Bovine Enamel in situ

Abstract: The addition of potential remineralizing agents into bleaching gels might play an important role in maintaining the microhardness of sound enamel and in inducing remineralization of artificially demineralized enamel right after bleaching, and the remineralizing action of human saliva might minimize the deleterious effects of bleaching gels on enamel. Clinical significance: The incorporation of calcium into HP bleaching gel might be beneficial for the initial phases of the bleaching procedure.

“…The gel used in this study contains potassium hydroxide, which is a strong alkaline component that may be able to neutralize acids in aqueous environments. 22 Another component present in the formulation of the bleaching gel is sodium fluoride, which is broadly added to toothpastes as a caries preventive element. According to the manufacturer, these components play an important role in desensitizing mechanisms, preventing demineralization development and loss of hardness.…”

“…[9][10][11] The association of hydrogen peroxide with calcium has been reported to reduce enamel mineral alterations when bleaching and erosion are combined. [12][13][14][15][16] During the bleaching treatment, the patients should maintain their oral hygiene, in which dentifrices play an important role. Their use, together with a toothbrush, may increase or decrease enamel and dentin wear.…”
