Objectives:To evaluate the attractiveness of a smile according to variations from esthetic norms, photographic framing, and the order of the presentation of photographs. Materials and Methods: A photograph of an individual was selected and digitally manipulated to create the following smiles: an ideal control smile (I), a smile with diastema (D1), a smile with midline deviation (LM3), a smile with deviation from the long axes of the lateral incisors (10D), and a smile with an inverted smile arc (LSRV). The manipulated photographs were developed in framings of the face and of the mouth and evaluated by 20 laypeople. For half the evaluators, the presentation started with facial photographs and, for the other half, the presentation began with the mouth shots. Evaluators were asked to rank the photographs from the least to the most attractive; then, each photograph was awarded a mark (scale of 0.0 to 10.0). Results: In both presentations, the smiles I, LM3, 10D, and LSRV received favorable ratings, whereas the D1 smile got poor ratings. The photographic framings used (face vs mouth) and the order of presentation of the photographs did not influence the rankings.
Conclusion:The absence of variations from beauty norms of a smile has a positive impact on its esthetic perception, but variations from the norms do not necessarily result in reduced attractiveness. (Angle Orthod. 2009;79:634-639.)
O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a qualidade de luvas de látex de procedimento de cinco marcas comerciais utilizadas na prática clínica. Foram realizados os testes de Inspeção Visual (IV) e de Integridade (TI) em luvas de procedimento a fim de detectar possíveis defeitos de fabricação. Foram avaliadas 1007 luvas de procedimento (duas caixas tamanho M de cada fabricante). Do total, 3,87% apresentaram problemas no teste IV e 1,96% no TI. A marca SATARI® obteve melhor desempenho no teste IV, enquanto a SUPERMAX® o pior. A marca DESCARPACK® obteve o melhor desempenho no TI e a EMBRAMAC® o pior. No quesito hermeticidade, em comparação com o nível de qualidade aceitável, imposto pelo INMETRO, as marcas EMBRAMAC® e LEMGRUBER® foram reprovadas.
AISI 1020 steel bars cooling have been investigated aiming to obtain their cooling rate during heat treatment. Hot steel bars just taken out of the furnace are piled over other ones that were taken out of the furnace earlier. A mathematical model has been created and implemented using the software EES, Engineering Equation Solver. An experiment was conducted to validate the mathematical model. The experiment consists in three loads of three bars each with a time interval of 5 minutes between them. The initial temperature of each bar was 150oC. The mathematical model can obtain the thermal profile of each bar and the average and maximum deviation when confronted with experimental data were about 8% and 20% respectively.
