In-depth interviews about the experience after having an abortion were conducted with 20 teenage girls in Taiwan. Six themes emerged by using Colaizzi's phenomenological methodology: (a) returning to "normal" life as soon as possible, (b) seeking abortion resources, (c) neglecting post-abortion care, (d) disturbed by the fetus ghost, (e) concern about virginity loss and choices for future, and (f) re-examining relationships with partners. Teenage girls received tremendous social and moral pressure due to their traditional cultural and social environment when they went through the abortion experience. The study helps health professionals understand the experience of those girls.
Objective Responding to emotional cues is an essential element of therapeutic communication. The purpose of this study is to examine nurses' competence of responding to emotional cues (CRE) and related factors while interacting with standardized patients with cancer. Methods This is an exploratory and predictive correlational study. A convenience sample of registered nurses who have passed the probationary period in southern Taiwan was recruited to participate in 15‐minute videotaped interviews with standardized patients. The Medical Interview Aural Rating Scale was used to describe standardized patients' emotional cues and to measure nurses' CRE. The State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to evaluate nurses' anxiety level before the conversation. We used descriptive statistics to describe the data and stepwise regression to examine the predictors of nurses' CRE. Results A total of 110 nurses participated in the study. Regardless of the emotional cue level, participants predominately responded to cues with inappropriate distancing strategies. Prior formal communication training, practice unit, length of nursing practice, and educational level together explain 36.3% variances of the nurses' CRE. Conclusions This study is the first to explore factors related to Taiwanese nurses' CRE. Compared to nurses in other countries, Taiwanese nurses tended to respond to patients' emotional cues with more inappropriate strategies. We also identified significant predictors of CRE that show the importance of communication training. Future research and education programs are needed to enhance nurses' CRE and to advocate for emotion‐focused communication.
BACKGROUND Obesity is a major public health problem in the world. Physical inactivity is one of the significant risk factors for obesity. Both problems are prevalent in Indonesia. However, there are no valid Indonesian tools to explore the influences of PA. Owing to cultural and social-context issues, developing the Indonesian-Bahasa version of instrument is an important task to explore the influence on PA in Indonesia. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to validate the cultural appropriateness of the Indonesian-Bahasa version of the Influences on Physical Activity Instrument (IPAI-I) and test its psychometric properties. METHODS Using a cross-sectional design, our study samples came from community health-centers in west-Java, where 1200 residents underwent health screening. Eligible subjects were 846 obese-adult who were recruited as study participants. The Indonesian version of IPAI-I was assessed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to examine the psychometric properties, where reliability was tested using internal consistency and stability. RESULTS Through EFA via Principal Axis Factoring with Oblimin rotation, the 21-item IPAI-I exhibited cross-cultural appropriateness, readability with three factors in the individual domain, one factor in the support domain, and two factors in the environment domain. A second-order confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated the model’s goodness of fit: χ2/df = 1.33, GFI =0.94, and RMSEA =0.031 (p < .01). The support domain and environment domain were moderately correlated (r =0.51; p < .001), but the two domains had a very low correlation with the individual domain. The reliability of the instrument was tested by intraclass correlation and Cronbach’s α. The factors’ intra-rater reliability values were 0.73–0.92, and the Cronbach's alphas were 0.82–0.91. CONCLUSIONS The IPAI-I is valid and reliable for exploring the influences on physical activity for overweight or obese individuals in Indonesia.
