Depression is a mood disorder characterized by loss of interest or pleasure in activities of daily living. Frequent and disabling geriatric syndrome that often goes unnoticed, which generates physical and functional. The objective was to know the depressive symptoms in older adults in a rural community in the state of Puebla, Mexico. Study was descriptive, correlational, cross, made of 155 seniors was an applied to Scale Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression CES-D and the Scale of Yesavage. The age range of older adults was 60 to 90 years, with a predominance of female gender in 65.2%, the CES-D reported 18.7% were found no clinical y significant symptoms, 70.3% in symptoms of sub- threshold depression, 9% in possible major depressive episode, 1.9% in probable major depressive episode. Similar results to those of Scale of Yesavage 43.2% found no evidence of depression, 32.9% with mild depression, 17.4% with moderate depression and 6.5% with severe depression. Noticing a difference by gender (Women=8482.00, Male=3608.00, p=.023). Knowing depressive symptoms in older adults can implement care interventions based on scientific evidence.
La depresión es un trastorno del estado del ánimo que se caracteriza por la pérdida de interés o placer por las actividades de la vida diaria. Síndrome geriátrico que generalmente pasa desapercibido generando un gran deterioro físico y funcional. El objetivo del trabajo fue conocer la sintomatología depresiva en adultos mayores de una comunidad rural del estado de Puebla, México. Estudio descriptivo, correlacional, transversal, realizado en 155 adultos mayores a quienes se les aplicó la Escala del Centro de Estudios Epidemiológicos de la Depresión CES-D y la Escala de Yesavage. El rango de edad fue de 60 a 90 años, predominó el género femenino (65.2%), el CES-D reportó que el 18.7% se encontró sin síntomas clínicamente significativos, el 70.3% en síntomas de depresión sub-umbral, el 9% en posible episodio de depresión mayor y el 1.9% en probable episodio de depresión mayor. Resultados análogos a los de la Escala de Yesavage en donde el 43.2% se encontró sin datos de depresión, el 32.9% con depresión leve, el 17.4% con depresión moderada y el 6.5% con depresión severa. Dándose una diferencia por género (Femenino=8482.00, Masculino=3608.00; p=.023). El conocer la sintomatología depresiva en adultos mayores permite implementar intervenciones de cuidado basadas en evidencia científica.Palabras clave: Sintomatología depresiva, depresión, adulto mayor.
