The incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease among women has increased significantly over the last 50 years. However, women diagnosed with ischemic cardiopathy benefit to a much lesser extent from both pharmacological or interventional treatment and inclusion in cardiovascular rehabilitation programs. Cardiovascular rehabilitation programs in women should be individualized, taking into account the particularities of cardiovascular risk factors, effort, aritmogenic risk, socio-economic status. Women's cardiovascular rehabilitation programs need to be diversified and deployed in smaller groups of female patiens. These programs should include, besides physical recovery, emotional, social and psychological support. The purpose of this article is to synthesize some of the particularities of cardiovascular rehabilitation in women with ischemic heart disease and rhythm disorders.
The presentation aims to illustrate in a didactic manner the clinical aspects, laboratory findings and the diagnostic steps in a case of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), also pointing out the importance of differential diagnosis for the triad consisting of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute kidney injury. The clinician's approach regarding the prognostic factors is also depicted, alongside the hallmarks concerning the treatment of HUS, the aspects of acute kidney injury monitoring and the need for a long term follow-up of HUS patients.
Introduction. Migraine is an important cause of disability that affects the quality of life producing a substantial social impairment. Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between migraine severity and comorbidities in patients with episodic migraine. Methods. 2 groups of patients were included in the study: group 1 – control group (healthy subjects, n = 50), and group 2 – study group (patients with episodic migraine attacks, n = 65). Both groups were assessed for nonmodifiable risk factors (age), and modifiable risk factors: BMI (body mass index), lipids profiles (LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides), inflammatory parameters (C reactive protein and fibrinogen), and endothelial dysfunction (nitric oxide synthesis expressed as NOx). The migraine was diagnosed according to ICHD-2 (International Classification of Headache Disorders) and the severity was evaluated by MIDAS (Migraine Disability Assessment Scale). The study group was compared with control group. The parameters that showed statistic significance were correlated with MIDAS scale. Results. There was a significant correlation between the severity and frequency of migraine attacks (evaluated by MIDAS scale) and BMI. The subgroup with higher inflammatory parameters and decreased NOx had an increased MIDAS score. Conclusions. The connection between obesity, inflammatory parameters and migraine may be useful for new prophylaxis potent therapies. The individual personalized therapies according with particular risk factors of each patient may be a chance for better results. Identification and control of risk factors in migraine patients may be particularly important.
"Dental practitioners, sometimes, are facing patient’s requests to overtreatment care, which in many situations is completely unnecessary or even dangerous/ risky/ disproportionate to the patient’s (oral) health state/condition. It can include procedures such as: teeth whitening, removal of amalgam fillings, closing diastema, veneers, dental extractions, root canal treatment, dental implants or fixed orthodontic appliances. It is known that dentistry practice belongs to two different and conflicting worlds, medical and business. In front of such situations, dentists should decide the right way of doing their job: being a medical doctor and treating patients or doing business and executing exactly what patients are asking for. Due to these facts, this presentation aims to: 1) identify the main issues related to this dilemma of dentists and 2) offer a better perspective on realizing dental esthetics treatments without jeopardize the oral health of the patient, but also the dentist’s profession and professional integrity.
