We assessed the extent of convergence and divergence between two leading family theorists!therapists, Salvador Minuchin and Carl Whitaker. Twelve assessment interviews were studied, six by each therapist. An intensive series of linguistic analyses and spatial representations of communication patterns showed, overall, remarkable similarities and consistency. In general, both Whitaker and Minuchin took a highly active, present-oriented, educational approach, intervening forcefully, personally, and indirectly as well as directly. The few differences that emerged were congruent with theoretical differences. Discussion focuses on common and unique factors in family systems treatment.
