Most previous research documenting the frequent abandonment by fathers of contact with their children has been based on survey responses of custodial mothers. The present survey of 220 divorcing couples revealed that the noncustodial parents reported significantly more visits with their children, as well as significantly more denial of visitation by their ex-spouses, than did the custodial parents.
Violence is best understood as an epidemic health problem, and it can be effectively prevented and treated using health methods to stop events and outbreaks and to reduce its spread. This health framing is important because it recognizes that violence is a threat to the health of populations, that exposure to violence causes serious health problems, and that violent behavior is contagious and can be treated as a contagious process. Relatively standard and highly effective health approaches to changing behaviors and norms are increasingly being applied to the problem of violence and are showing strong evidence of impact among individuals and communities. We need to mobilize our nation's health care and public health systems and methods to work with communities and other sectors to stop this epidemic.
Illinois Deaf Services2000 (IDS2000), a public/private partnership,
promotes the creation and implementation of strategies to develop and
increase access to mental health services for deaf, hard of hearing,
late-deafened, and deaf-blind consumers. IDS2000 has resulted in the
establishment of service accessibility standards, a technical support
and adherence monitoring system, and the beginnings of a statewide
telepsychiatry service. These system modifications have resulted in
increase by 60% from baseline survey data in the number of deaf, hard of
hearing, late-deafened, and deaf-blind consumers identified in community
mental-health agencies in Illinois. Depending on the situation of deaf
services staff and infrastructure, much of IDS2000 could be replicated
in other states in a mostly budget-neutral manner.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
