This study seeks to: (1) apply natural dyes made from Indigofera on batik using alum, lime, and fero(II) sulfate fixation, (2) develop batik designs with natural dyes from Indigofera on cotton fabrics for batik, and (3) apply natural dyes made from Indigofera on silk fabrics for batik. The problems in this study were solved using several steps which included analysis of problems related to the use of Indigofera natural dyes, data collection and observation, formulation of strategies to create batik products through experimentation (action research) in terms of experimental techniques, materials, and design motifs. The results of this study conclude several points, including visualization of batik designs using natural dyes from Indigofera and solutions to problems that arise in batik dyeing experiments using natural Indigofera dyes.
The design of Cilacap batik was developed by batik artisan in Cilacap by utilizing its local potentials both in techniques, aesthetics, as well as its symbolic values which contained in its motifs. Cilacap batik takes main motifs of marine life and plants typical of Cilacap, namely the pelahlar tree. The added value of Cilacap batik is that it uses environmentally friendly natural dyes for its production, namely mangrove and indigofera plants. A production method with natural dyes is a form of solution made by the community in response to environmental issues, especially the issue regarding liquid waste produced from the residue of batik dyes that do not harm the environment. The research method used in this research is a qualitative method accompanied with data collection techniques in the form of observation and interviews with the local artisans and business people of Cilacap batik.
This study aims to apply Terminalia bellirica, Ceriop condolleana, Cudrania javanensis, and Pelthopherum pterocarpum as textile dyes to cotton and silk fabrics. The experimental method was carried out to utilize the waste of Terminalia bellirica, Ceriop condolleana, Cudrania javanensis, and Pelthopherum pterocarpum as natural dyes using alum, lime, and ferrous sulphate fixations. The fixation values of alum, lime, and ferrous sulphate using natural dyes were at level 3 (good) on cotton and level 4 (very good) on silk.
