DISCUSSIONTable I shows nitrogen results using the Sn(II)-H3P04 reagent. Comparison results by other methods are shown. The comparison analyses were all performed in this laboratory.As can be seen from Table I, there was no loss of nitrogen. Ammonium chloride has been heated for 10 minutes with the Sn(II)-H3P04 reagent to 280 °C and there was no nitrogen loss. Titanium nitride decomposes to a deep blue solution which shows that strong reducing conditions are present. Blank determinations carried out with the reagents and glassware showed about 18 micrograms of nitrogen. This is rel-atively low and amounts to about 0.02% nitrogen with 0.1-gram sample.There are several approaches for determining nitrogen in nitrides. Healy and Parker (3) have given an excellent account of some of these. However, the reducing medium described here offers a unique method that is relatively simple, rapid, and widely applicable.
