A stannous octoate catalyzed phenyl isocyanate method for the determination of the hydroxyl equivalent weight of polyoxyalkylene compounds is described. The method is relatively free from side reactions because stannous octoate is a relatively selective catalyst for the alcoholisocyanate reaction. The method is applicable to most hydroxyl compounds including sterically hindered and tertiary alcohols. Aromatic hydroxyl compounds are an exception and cannot be determined. Reaction times in the range of 30 to 40 minutes at room temperature are usually required. Thus, the method is rapid and the precision is comparable with conventional acylation methods.N THE manufacture of flexible and
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
