This article analyzes the pedagogical rationale and learning
outcomes for incorporating a special collections department in teaching
humanities undergraduate and graduate courses. This case study highlights
an innovative collaboration between a University of Colorado German
professor and the special collections librarian and staff.
The University of Colorado Boulder (CU-Boulder) is known for strong programming in the sciences and a teaching faculty at the forefront of science education and reform. Librarians at CU-Boulder, in collaboration with science faculty, are challenged to improve undergraduate science education. Using rare, historic, and artistic works from Special Collections, the librarians employ active learning techniques that emphasize visual imagery to improve the quality of undergraduate learning in the sciences. This paper describes the fledgling program developed by CU-Boulder librarians to create a space for student-driven, collaborative learning using historic and visual scientific materials found in Special Collections.
With the aid of seed money from a federal grant, librarians at the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU Boulder) developed an online statistical abstract called Colorado by the Numbers (CBN). The last print version of the Colorado Statistical Abstract was published in 1987. CBN provides updated socio‐economic data about the state and its counties on the Web. Librarians have gone beyond the acquisition and maintenance of traditional printed information sources to producing tailor made resources that meet the information needs of their local community. The CBN design and management model is discussed.
