This paper examines the relation between the premium on closed-end funds and organizational features of the funds and advisors, including the compensation scheme of the investment advisor. We find that the fund premium is larger when:~a! the advisor's compensation is more sensitive to fund performance;~b! the assets managed by the advisor are concentrated in the fund in question;~c! the advisor manages other funds with low compensation sensitivity to performance and with low concentration of assets managed by the advisor; and~d! the advisor's compensation contract evaluates performance relative to a benchmark. THE GROWTH IN ASSETS UNDER MANAGEMENT by investment companies has motivated both theoretical and empirical interest in the contractual relation-ship between portfolio managers and their clients. 1 This paper considers how the interaction between organization structure, managerial incentives, and managerial behavior determines pricing of shares of closed-end funds. In particular, we examine how the form of the compensation scheme of the fund advisor0manager and the extent to which the assets managed by the fund advisor are spread across multiple funds are related to the premium at which a closed-end fund trades.
BUSINESS WRITING INSTRUCTORS work diligently at raising the level of student writing performance in business communication classes. Some students, however, need additional motivation to apply writing concepts and perform to their highest level. Typically, business students are confronted with hypothetical writing situations, such as claim letters, sales letters, and case analysis reports, and they receive instruction in writing principles, such as tone, audience analysis, conciseness, and mechanics. Yet our experience has taught us that students want to see the tangible results of their writing, and one way to do that is to incorporate actual business situations into assignments. If nonprofit organizations are selected, they could benefit financially from well-crafted student-generated documents.The purpose of this article is to provide communication instructors with two persuasive writing assignments that use nonprofit clients as a vehicle. As college communication instructors, we could further assist students by teaching the value of positive networking. This article provides (1) a foundation for positive networking and (2) several successful ways in which students can begin building a strong long-lasting network of professional relationships during the semester…and for their entire careers.
<p>Business educators understand the value of improving students written and oral communication skills. However, too often assignments used to develop these important skills are taught in isolation. The purpose of this article is to enhance a students written and oral skills by integrating all aspects of the job search written documents and interview practice while utilizing a student-selected job announcement. Each student must find a job announcement for an internship or career position that is consistent with the students major. The job announcement should list the organizations needs in terms of degree required and specific skills. This article outlines an integrated process of teaching written and oral communication skills through the entire job search. Thus, the job announcement is the focal point for the students resume, cover letter, career portfolio, and mock interview. Student feedback from the integrated process described in this article has been very positive and rewarding. Students consistently indicate their satisfaction when they successfully apply their self-marketing tools and secure a desired position prior to graduation.</p>
While resumes and interviews are a part of the typical process of obtaining a job, they are not the only tools that can be used. A career portfolio is a more complete tool. In the portfolio, the applicant includes a resume but adds evidence of abilities, knowledge, skills, and potential. These documents build credibility. A student who is graduating and seeking an entry-level position would likely include documents produced during academic coursework. Across a career, such documents would be replaced with projects completed on the job and with the permission of the employer. It can assist the individual demonstrate qualifications in a performance evaluation or for promotion. Thus, the career portfolio can be useful in obtaining an internship or entry-level position and throughout a career’s progression.
